vaiśampāyana uvāca
śūro nāma yaduśreṣṭho vasudevapitābhavat
tasya kanyā pṛthā nāma rūpeṇāpratimā bhuvi
Vaiśampāyana said: There was a chief among Yadus, named Śūra, who was father of Vasudeva. His daughter was named Pṛthā. She was matchless in beauty on Earth.
pitṛṣvasrīyāya sa tāmanapatyāya bhārata
agryamagre pratijñāya svasyāpatya sa satyavāk
agrajāmatha tāṁ kanyāṁ śūro ̍ nugrahakāṁkṣiṇe
pradadau kuntibhojāya sakhā sakhye mahātmane
O descendant of Bhārata race, that truthful Śūra gave his first born child to son of his parental aunt, his childless cousin and favour seeking friend, high souled Kuntibhoja, according to a promise given before.
sā niyuktā piturgehe devatātithipūjane
ugraṁ paryacarat tatra brāhmaṇaṁ saṁśitavratam
nigūḍhaniścayaṁ dharme yaṁ taṁ durvāsasaṁ viduḥ
tamugraṁ saṁśitātmānaṁ sarvayatnairatoṣayat
Pṛthā was appointed as her adoptive father ̍ s house to look after hospitality to Brāhmaṇas and guests. One day by careful attentions she gratified terrible Brāhmaṇa of rigid vows, known by the name of Durvāsā, learned in the mystery of religion.
tasyai sa pradadau mantramāpaddharmānvavekṣya
abhicārābhisaṁyuktamabravīccaiva tāṁ muniḥ
Anticipating future difficulty of her getting sons, Durvāsā taught her Mantra for invoking any of celestials, she liked for growing her children. Ṛṣi then said to her:
yaṁ yaṁ devaṁ tvametena mantreṇāvāhayiṣyasi
tasya tasya prasādena tava putro bhaviṣyati
Though effulgence of those celestial whom you will invoke by this Mantra, an offspring will be certainly begotten on you.
tathoktā sā tu vipreṇa kuntī kautuhalānvitā
kanyā satī devamarkamājuhāva yaśasvinī
Having been thus told by Brāhmaṇa Durvāsā, illustrious Kuntī - Pṛthā, being curious, invoked in her maidenhood Sun god Arka.
sā dadarśa tamāyāntaṁ bhāskaraṁ lokabhāvanam
vismitā cānavadyāṅgī dṛṣṭvā tanmahadadbhutam
She immediately saw before her that effulgent deity - Sun, that beholder of everything in the world. seeing wonderful sight, that maiden of beautiful features was very much surprised.
tāṁ samāsādya devastu vivasvānidamabravīt
ayamasmyasitāpāṅgi brūhi kiṁ karavāṇi te
Deity Vivasvān - sun, coming to her said: O black eyed lady, here I am. Tell me what I can do for you!
kuntyuvāca
kaścinme brāhmaṇaḥ prādādvaraṁ vidyāṁ ca śatruhan
tadvijijñāsayā āhvānaṁ kṛtavatyasmi te vibho
Kuntī said: O slayer of foes, certain Brāhmaṇa gave me this Mantra. O lord! I have invoked you only to see efficacy of Mantra.
etasminnaparādhe tvaṁ śirasāhaṁ prasādaye
yoṣito hi sadā rakṣyāḥ svāparāddhāpi nityaśaḥ
for my this fault, Ibow down my head to you to ask for your grace. A woman, however guilty, deserves protection.
sūrya uvāca
vedāhaṁ sarvamevaitadyaddurvāsā varaṁ dadau
saṁtyajya bhayameveha kriyatāṁ saṁgamo mama
Sun said: I know Durvāsā has given you this boon. Cast off your fears and allow me your embrace.
amoghaṁ darśanaṁ mahyamāhūtaścāsmi te śubhe
vṛthāhvāne ̍ pi te bhīru doṣaḥ syānnātra saśayaḥ
O amiable girl! My approach is infallible. It must be fruitful. O timid maiden! If my coming be for nothing, it will be certainly a transgression of yours.
vaiśampāyana uvāca
evamuktā bahuvidhaṁ sāntvapūrvaṁ vivasvatā
sā tu naicchadvarārohā kanyāhamiti bhārata
Vaiśampāna said: Vaivasvata thus spoke to her many things to ally her fears. O descendant of Bharata race! Illustrious and beautiful girl, as she was a maid.
bandhupakṣabhayādbhītā lajjayā ca yaśasvinī
tāmarkaḥ punarevedamabravīdbharatarṣabha
Did not grant his request from modesty and from the fear of her relatives. O best of Bharata race! Arka again addressed her thus.
matprasādānna te rājñi bhavitā doṣa ityuta
evamuktvā sa bhagavānkuntirājasutāṁ tadā
O princess! There will be no sin in gratifying me.
Having said this to the daughter of Kuntibhoja, that illustrious deity.
prakāśakartā tapanaḥ saṁbabhūva tayā saha
āmuktavacaḥ śrīmāndevagarbhaḥ śriyānvitaḥ
sahajaṁ kavacaṁ bibhratkuṇḍalo dyotitānanaḥ
ajāyata sutaḥ karṇaḥ sarvalokeṣu viśrutaḥ
That illuminator of the universe, Tapana - Sun, received her embraces. Thereupon was born a hero, known all over the world by the name of Karṇa, foremost of all wielders of arms, encased in a natural armour, blessed with good fortune and endued with celestial beauty and all auspicious marks and with a face brightened by earrings.
prādācca tasyaivaṁ punaḥ sa paramadyutiḥ
datvā ca tapatāṁ śreṣṭho divamācakrame tataḥ
Greatly effulgent Tapana, then giving Pṛthā her maiden hood, again went to heaven.
dṛṣṭvā kumāraṁ jātaṁ sā vārṣṇeyī dīnamānasā
ekāgraṁ cintayāmāsa kiṁ kṛtvā sukṛtaṁ bhavet
Princess of Vṛṣṇi race - Pṛthā became affected with sorrow to see the birth of the child. She intently reflected on the course she should adopt.
gūhamānāpacāraṁ sā bandhupakṣabhayāttadā
utsasarja kumāraṁ taṁ jale kuntī mahābalam
She resolved to conceal her frailty from the fear of her friends and relatives. Kuntī threw her that powerful son into water.
tamutsṛṣṭaṁ jale garbhaṁ rādhābhartā mahāyaśāḥ
putratve kalpayāmāsa sabhāryaḥ sūtanandanaḥ
Illustrious husband of Rādhā took up that child thrown into the water. That son of Suta, husband of Rādhā, with his wife brought him up as their son.
nāmadheyaṁ ca cakrāte tasya bālasya tāvubhau
vasunā saha jāto ̍ yaṁ vasuṣeṇo bhavatviti
They gave that son the name Vasusena, because he was born with wealth, a natural armour and earrings.
sa vardhamāno balavānsarvāstreṣūdyato ̍ bhavat
ā pṛṣṭhatāpādādityamupātiṣṭhata vīryavān
He grew up very strong and became expert in all weapons. Possessed of great energy, he worshipped Sun until his back was acorched by its rays.
tasminkāle tu japatastasya vīrasya dhīmataḥ
nādeyaṁ brāhmaṇeṣvāsītkiṁcidvasu mahītale
When he was thus engaged in his worship, there was nothing on Earth that heroic and intelligent Vasusena would not give to Brāhmaṇas.
tamindro brāhmaṇo bhūtvā bhikṣārthī samupāgamat
kuṇḍale prārthayāmāsa kavacaṁ ca mahādyutiḥ
Indra, assuming the form of a Brāhmaṇa, came to him for alms. Even engaged to do good to Arjuna, he asked for the armour.
svaśarīrāt samutkṛtya kavacaṁ svaṁ nisargajam
karṇastu kuṇḍale chittvā prāyacchat sa kṛtāñjaliḥ
Taking off his natural armour from his body, Karṇa with joined hands gave it to Indra in the form of a Brāhmaṇa.
pratigṛhya tu deveśastuṣṭastenāsya karmaṇā
dadau śaktiṁ surapatirvākyaṁ cedamuvāca ha
Indra received the gift and was exceedingly pleased with his liberality. Indra gave him a weaponm saying.
devāsuramanuṣyāṇāṁ gandharvoragarakṣasām
yamekaṁ jetumicchethāḥ so ̍ nyā na bhaviṣyati
Among celestials, asuras, Gandharvas, Nāgas, Rākṣasas, whoever you will desire to conquer he will certainly be killed by this weapon.
prāṅnāma tasya kathitaṁ vasuṣeṇa iti kṣitau
karṇo vaikartanaścaiva karmaṇā tena so ̍ bhavat
Son of Sūrya was known by the name of Vasusena, but after cutting off his natural armour, he was called Karṇa - cutter.
