kasyacit tvatha kālasya saśiṣyo ̍ ṅgirasaṁ varaḥ
jagāma gaṅgāmabhito majjituṁ bharatarṣabha
O best of Bharata race! Some time after, the best of Aṅgirasā Droṇa with his pupils went to the Gaṅgā to battle.
avagāḍhamatho droṇaṁ salile salilecaraḥ
grāho jagrāha balavāñjaṅghānte kālacoditaḥ
When Droṇa was bathing,a strong alligator, as it sent by the Death himself, seized him at the thigh.
sa samartho ̍ pi mokṣāya śiṣyān sarvānacodayat
grāhaṁ hatvā mokṣayadhvaṁ māmiti tvarayanniva
Though quite capable of freeing himself from the mouth of the alligator, Droṇa spoke to all his disciples in a hurry: Kill this alligator and rescue me!
tadvākyasamakālaṁ tu bībhatsurniśitaiḥ śaraiḥ
avāryaiḥ pañcabhirgrāhaṁ magnamabhyasyātāḍayat
As soon as he uttered these words, Bhībhatsu Arjuna, struck tne alligator under the water with 5 sharp and irresistible arrows.
itare tvatha sammūḍhāstatra tatra prapedire
taṁ tu dṛṣṭvā kriyopetaṁ droṇo ̍ manyata pāṇḍavam
viśiṣṭaṁ sarvaśiṣyebhyaḥ prītimāṁścābhavat tadā
sa pārthabāṇairbahudhā khaṇḍaśaḥ parikalpitaḥ
grāhaḥ pañcatvamāpede jaṅghāṁ tyaktvā mahātmanaḥ
athābravīnmahātmanaṁ bhāradvājo mahāratham
Other disciples stood confounded each at his place. Seeing this readiness of Arjuna, Droṇa considered that Pāṇḍava to be foremost of all his disciples and he was exceedingly pleased. Alligator, being cut into pieces by the arrows of Pārtha, released the thibh of high souled Droṇa and gave up his life. Thereupon, son of Bharadvāja Droṇa, thus addressed illustrious car warriors, Arjuna.
gṛhāṇedaṁ mahābāho viśiṣṭamatidurdharam
astra brahmaśiro nāma saprayoganivartanam
O mighty armed! Accept this superior and irresistible weapon, named Brahmaśira, with its method of hurling and recalling it.
na ca te mānuṣepvetat prayoktavyaṁ kathaṁcana
jagad vinirdahedetadalpatejasi pātitam
You must not use it against any human foe! If hurled at a foe of inferiour power, it might burn whole universe.
asāmānyamidaṁ tāta lokepvastraṁ nigadyate
tad dhārayethāḥ prayataḥ śrṇu cedaṁ vaco mama
O son! It is said that this weapon has not a superior in 3 worlds. Keep it therefore with great care and listen to what I say.
bādhetāmānuṣaḥ śatruryadi tvāṁ vīra kaścana
tadvadhāya prayuñjīthāstadastramidamāhave
O hero! If ever any foe, if he is not human, comes to fight with you, may then use it against him to accomplish his death.
tatheti sampratiśrutya bībhatsuḥ sa kṛtāñjaliḥ
jagrāha paramāstraṁ tadāha cainaṁ punarguruḥ
bhavitā tvatsamo nānyaḥ pumām̐lloke dhanurdharaḥ
Bībhatsu, Arjuna, with joined hands promised to do as he was bidden and he received great weapon. Guru then spoke to him again thus: None will ever become a superior bowman to you. You will be invincible and greatly illustrious.
