Droṇa and Bhīṣma

 vaiśampāyana uvāca

tato drupadamāsādya bhāradvajaḥ pratāpavān
abravīt pārthivaṁ rājan sakhāyaṁ viddhi māmiha

Vaiśampāyana said: O king! Thereupon mighty son of Bharadvāja Droṇa, coming before Drupada, told that king: Consider me as friend!

ityevamuktaḥ sakhyā sa prītipūrvaṁ janeśvaraḥ
bhāradvajena pāñcālo nāmṛṣyata vaco ̍ sya tat

Having been thus joyfully addressed by his friend, son of Bharadvāja Droṇa, king of Pāñcāla, could not bear those words.

sakrodhāmarṣajihmabhrūḥ kaṣāyīkṛtalocanaḥ
aiśvaryamadasampanno droṇaṁ rājābravīdidam

King intoxicated with pride of wealth, contracted his brows in anger and with eyes red in wrath, spoke to Droṇa thus:

drupada uvāca
akṛteyaṁ tava prajñā brahman nātisamañjasā
yanmāṁ bravīṣi prasabhaṁ sakhā te ̍ hamiti dvija

O Brāhmaṇa! Your intelligence is hardly high in order. You address me all on a sudden as your friend.

na hi rājñāmudīrṇānāmevambhūtairnaraiḥ kvacit
sakhyaṁ bhavati mandātmān śriyā hīnairdhanamacyutaiḥ

O dull minded man! Great kings can never be friends with such luckless and indigent fellow as you.

sauhṛdānyapi jīryante kālena parijīryataḥ
sauhṛdaṁ me tvayā hyāsīt pūrvaṁ sāmarthyabandhanam

We had friendship between us when we were both equal in circumstances, but time wears out everything and our friendship too.

na sakhyamajaraṁ loke hṛdi tiṣṭhati kasyacit
kālo hyenaṁ viharati krodho vairaṁ haratyuta

Friendship never remains in any one ̍ s heart in this world being worn out. Time wears it out and anger also destroys it.

maivaṁ jīrṇamupāssva tvaṁ sakhyaṁ bhavatvapākṛdhi
āsīt sakhyaṁ dvijaśreṣṭha tvyā me ̍ rthanibandhanam

Do not therefore stick to our worn out friendship. Do not think of it any longer. O best of Brāhmaṇas! Friendship I entertained for you was for a particular purpose.

na daridro vasumato nāvidvān viduṣaḥ sakhā
na śūrasya sakhā klībaḥ sakhipūrvaṁ kimiṣyate

Poor cannot be friend of a rich. unlearned of a learned, coward of a brave hero. How then you desire the continuance of our old friendship?

yayoreva samaṁ kittaṁ yayoreva samaṁ śrutama
tayorvivāhaḥ sakhyaṁ ca na tu puṣṭavipuṣṭayoḥ

Friendship or enmity ec+xists between two persons equally situated as to wealth or prowess. Poor and rich can neither be friends nor enemies of each other.

nāśrotriyaḥ śrotriyasya nārathī rathinaḥ sakhā
nārājā pārthivasyāpi sakhipūrvaṁ kimiṣyate

One of pure birth can never be a friend of one who is of low birth. Car warrior cannot be a friend of one who is not a car warrior. One who is not a king, cannot have a king for his friend. How then you desire the continuance of our old friendship?

muhūrtaṁ cintayitvā tu manyunābhipariplutaḥ
sa viniścitya manasā pāñcālaṁ prati buddhimān
jagāma kurumukhyānāṁ nagaraṁ nāgasāhvayam

Vaiśampāyana said: Thus addressed by Drupada, powerful son of Bharadvāja was filled with anger and reflecting for a moment that wise man made up his mind as to his course of action regards to king of Pāñcāla. Then he went to the city of Kurus, Hāstinapura.
