vaiśampāyana uvāca
atha rātryāṁ vyatītāyāmaśeṣo nāgaro janaḥ
tatrājagāma tvarito didṛkṣuḥ pāṇḍunandanān
Vaiśampāyana said: When the night had passed away, a large number of people of the city came there to see Pāṇḍavas.
nirvāpayanto jvalanaṁ te janā dadṛśustataḥ
jātuṣaṁ tad gṛhaṁ dagdhamamātyaṁ ca purocanam
Those men extinguished fire and saw that house was made of lac and that counsellor Purocana had been burnt to death.
nūnaṁ duryodhanenedaṁ vihitaṁ pāpakarmaṇā
pāṇḍavānāṁ vināśāyetyevaṁ te cukruṣurjanāḥ
Citizens said: Indeed this sinful act was contrived by wicked Duryodhana to destroy Pāṇḍavas.
vidite dhṛtarāṣṭrasya dhārtarāṣṭro na saṁśayaḥ
dagdhavān pāṇḍudāyādān na hyenaṁ pratiṣiddhavān
There is no doubt that son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra - Duryodhana, has burnt to death the heirs of Pāṇḍu with full knowledge of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, else he would have been prevented by his father.
nūnaṁ śāṅtanavo ̍ pīha na dharmamanuvartate
droṇaśca viduraiścaiva kṛpaścānye ca kauravāḥ
Indeed, son of Śāntanu Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Vidura, Kṛpa and other Kurus have not followed dictates of duty.
te vayaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭrasya preṣayāmo durātmanaḥ
saṁvṛttaste paraḥ kāmaḥ pāṇḍavān dagdhavānasi
Let us now send words to the wicked minded Dhṛtarāṣṭra saying: Your great desire is fulfilled! You have burnt to death Pāṇḍavas!
tato vyapohamānāste pāṇḍavārthe hutāśanam
niṣādīṁ dadṛśurdagdhāṁ pañcaputrāmanāgasam
Vaiśampāyana said: They then began to extinguish fire to find out Pāṇḍavas. They saw Niṣāda woman burnt to death with her 5 sons.
khanakena tu tenaiva veśma śodhayatā bilam
pāṁsubhiḥ pihitaṁ tacca puruṣaistairna lakṣitam
Miner, while removing ashes, covered with it the hole he had dug in such a way that it remained unnoticed by all who had gone there.
tataste jñāpayāmāsurdhṛtarāṣṭrasya nāgarāḥ
pāṇḍavānagninā dagdhānamātyaṁ ca purocanam
Citizens then sent a message to Dhṛtarāṣṭra to inform that Pāṇḍavas along with counsellor Purocana had been burnt to death.
śrutvā tu dhṛtarāṣṭrastad rājā sumahadapriyam
vināśaṁ pāṇḍuputrāṇāṁ vilalāpa suduḥkhitaḥ
Hearing great evil news of the death of Pāṇḍavas, King Dhṛtarāṣṭra bewailed in great sorrow.
adya pāṇḍurmṛto rājāmama bhrātā mahāyaśāḥ
teṣu vīreṣu dagdheṣu mātrā saha viśeṣataḥ
Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: King Pāṇḍu, my illustrious brother, has indeed died today, when those heroes Pāṇḍavas with their mother have been burnt to death!
gacchantu puruṣāḥ śīghraṁ nagaraṁ vāraṇāvatam
satkārayantu tān vīrān kuntīrājasutāṁ ca tām
O man! Go quickly to the city of Varaṇāvata and perform funeral rites of those heroes and of the daughter of king Kuntibhoja.
kārayantu ca kulyāni śubhāni ca bṛhanti ca
ye ca tatra mṛtāsteṣāṁ suhṛdo yāntu tānapi
Let also the bones of deceased be sanctioned by usual rites and let all the beneficial and great acts be performed. Let friends and relatives of those who have been burnt to death also go there.
evaṁ gate mayā śakyaṁ yad yat kārayituṁ hitam
pāṇḍavānāṁ ca kuntyāśca tat sarvaṁ kriyatāṁ dhanaiḥ
evamuktvā tataścakre jñātibhiḥ parivāritaḥ
udakaṁ pāṇḍuputrāṇāṁ dhṛtarāṣṭro ̍ mbikāsutaḥ
Let also all other beneficial acts that ought to be performed by us for Pāṇḍavas and Kuntī be accomplished by spending wealth. Having said this, son of Ambikā, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, surrounded by his relatives, offered oblations of water to manes of Pāṇḍavas.
ruruduḥ sahitāḥ sarve bhṛśaṁ śokaparāyaṇāḥ
hāyudhiṣṭhira kauravya hā bhīma iti cāpare
Being greatly afflicted with sorrow, wept with all others saying: O Yudhiṣṭhira! O descendant of Kuru! Others cried: O Bhīma!
hā phālguneti cāpyanye hā yamāviti cāpare
kuntīmārtāśca śocanta udakaṁ cakrire janāḥ
Others again: O Phālguni! some: O mother Kuntī! Thus they bewailed and gave oblations of water.
anye paurajanāścaivamanvaśocanta pāṇḍavān
vidurastvalpaśaścakre śokaṁ veda paraṁ hi saḥ
Other citizens also bewailed for Pāṇḍavas, but Vidura did not bewail ed much, for he knew the truth.
