Conversation between Pāṇḍu and Pṛthā

 vaiśampāyana uvāca

tatrāpi tapasi śrēṣṭhe vartamānaḥ sa vīryavān
siddhacāraṇasavranāṁ babhūva priyadarśanaḥ


Vaiśampāyana said: That greatly man Pāṇḍu, was there engaged in the best of asceticism and he soon became the favourite of all Siddhas and Cāraṇas.


śuśrūṣuranahaṁvādī saṁyatātmā jitendriyaḥ
svargaṁ gantuṁ parākrāntaḥ svena vīryeṇa bhārata


O descendant of Bhaarata race! He was devoted to the service of his Gurus. He was free from vanity, he was self controlled and master over his passions. Powerful man went to heaven by his own prowess.


keṣāṁcidabhavad bhrātā keṣāṁcidabhavat sakhā
ṛṣayastvapare cienaṁ putravat paryapālayan


He became the brother of some and the friend of others again treated him as their own son.


sa tu kālena mahatā prāpya niṣkaluṣaṁ tapaḥ
brahmarṣisadṛśaḥ pāṇḍurbabhūva bharatarṣabha


O best of the Bharata race!! After a long time Pāṇḍu acquired those and sinless ascetic merits, by which he became like a Brāhmaṇa.


amāvasyāṁ tu sahitā ṛṣayaḥ saṁśitavratāḥ
brahmaṇaṁ draṣṭukāmāste sampratasthurmaharṣayaḥ


On a new moon day the Ṛṣis of rigid vows assembled together and were about to start with the desire of seeing Brahmā.


samprayātānṛṣīn dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍurvacanamabravīt
bhavantaḥ kva gamiṣyanti brūta me vadatāṁ varāḥ


Seeing the Ṛṣis about to start, Pāṇḍu said: O best of eloquent men! Tell me where you are going?


ṛṣayaḥ ūcuḥ
samavāyo mahánadya brahmaloke mahātmanām
devānāṁ ca ṛṣīṇāṁ ca pitṛṇāṁ ca mahātmanām
vayaṁ tatra gamiṣyāmo draṣṭukāmāḥ svayambhuvam


Ṛṣi said: There will be a great assemblage of high souled celestial Ṛṣis and Pitṛs in the abode of Brahmā. We shall go there, we are desirous of seeing the self created Brahmā.


vaiśampāyana uvāca
pāṇḍurutthāya sahasā gantukāmo maharṣibhiḥ
svargapāraṁ titīrṣuḥ sa śataśṛṅgādudaṅmukhaḥ
pratasthe saha patnībhyāmabruvaṁstaṁ ca tāpasāḥ
uparyupari gacchantaḥ śailarājamudaṅmukhāḥ


Vaiśampāyana said: Pāṇḍu suddenly rose with desire of going with Ṛṣis and reaching heaven. When he was about to start with his 2 wives in a Northerly direction from the mountains with hundred peaks, ascetics addressed him thus.


dṛṣṭavanto girau ramye durgān deśān bahūn vayam
vimānaśatasambādhāṁ gītasvaranināditām
ākrīḍabhūmiṁ devānaṁ gandharvāpsarasāṁ tathā
udyānāni kuberasya samāni viṣamāṇi ca


In our Northward march, ascending the king of mountains, higher and higher we have seen many delightful and inaccessible regions, on the breast of the hill. We have seen the retreats of celestials, Gandharvas, Apsaras, with hundreds of places resounding with sweet note of celestial music.
We have seen the gardens of Kubera, laid out even on even and uneven grounds.


mahānadīnitambāṁśca gahanān girigahvarān
santi nityahimā deśā nirvṛkṣamṛgapakṣiṇaḥ


We have seen the banks of great rivers and mountain caverns. There are regions on that mountains everlasting covered with snow and devoid of birds and beasts and trees.


santi kvacinmahādaryo durgāḥ kāścid durāsadāḥ
nātikrāmeta pakṣī yān kuta evetare mṛgāḥ


There are some places, where are very dangerous caves that they are perfectly inaccessible and unfit for habitation. Not to speak of other creatures, even birds cannot cross them.


vāyureko hi yātyatra siddhāśca paramarṣayaḥ
gacchantyau śailarāje ̍ smin rājaputryau kathaṁ tvime
na sīdetāmaduḥkhārhe mā gamo bharatarṣabha


Only thing that can go there is air and only beings - Siddhas and great Ṛṣis. O best of Bharata race! These princesses are unaccustomed to hardship, how will they ascend those heights of the king of mountains? Therefore, do not come with us.


pāṇḍuruvāca

aprajasya mahābhāgā na dvāraṁ paricakṣate
svarge tenābhitapto ̍ hamaprajastu bravīmi vaḥ
pitryādṛṇādanirmuktastena tapye tapodhanāḥ


Pāṇḍu said: O greatly fortunate ones! Itis said that there is no heaven for a sonless. I am sonless. I speak to you in sorrow. O great ascetics! I am sorry because I have not been able to free myself from the debt I owe to my forefathers.


dehanāśe dhruvo nāśaḥ pitṝṇāmeṣa niścayaḥ
ṛṇaiścaturbhiḥ saṁyuktā jāyante mānavā bhuvi


In the dissolution of my body, my ancestors are sure tp perish. Men are born in this world with 4 debts.


pitṛdevarṣimanujairdeyaṁ tebhyaśca dharmataḥ
etāni tu yathākālaṁ yo na budhyati mānavaḥ
na tasya lokāḥ santīti dharmavidbhiḥ pratiṣṭhitam
yajñastu devān prīṇāti svādhyāyatapasā munīn


Namely the debts due to ancestors, celestials, Ṛṣis, other men. They must be discharged with virtue. It has been established by the learned men that no regions of bliss exist for those who neglect to pay in due time these debts. Celestials are paid by sacrifices, Ṛṣis by study and meditation.


putraiḥ śrāddhaiḥ pitṝṁścāpi ānṛśaṁsyena mānavān
ṛṣidevamanuṣyāṇāṁ parimukto ̍ smi dharmataḥ
trayāṇādanirmukta tu nāśa ātmani naśyati
pitryādṛṇādanirmukta idānīmasmi tāpasāḥ


Pitṛs by begetting chilrden and performing Śrāddha and the other men by humanity and kindness. I have virtuously discharged my debts to celestials, Ṛṣis and other men, but there are those Pitṛs, who are sure to perish at the dissolution of my body. O ascetics! I am not as yet free from the debt I owe to my ancestors.


iha tasmāt prajāhetoḥ prajāyante narottamāḥ
yathaivāhaṁ pituḥ kṣetre jātastena maharṣiṇā
tathaivāsmin mama kṣetre kathaṁ vai sambhavet prajā


The best of men were born to beget children to discharge that debt. As I was begotten by great Ṛṣi on the field of my father, so should children be begotten on my soil - wives.


ṛṣayaḥ ūcuḥ
asti vai tava dharmātmā vidmo devopamaṁ śubham
apatyamanaghaṁ rājan vayaṁ divyena cakṣuṣā
devoddiṣṭaṁ naravyāghra karmaṇehopapādaya


Ṛṣis said: O virtuous minded man! O king! There is progeny for you that will be sinless, greatly fortunate and like celestials themselves. We see this with our prophetic eyes. O best of kings! Therefore, accomplish the purposes of celestials by your acts.


akliṣṭaṁ phalamavyagro vindate buddhimān naraḥ
tasmin dṛṣṭe phale rājan prayatnaṁ kartumarhasi
apatyaṁ guṇasampannaṁ labdhā prītikaraṁ hyasi


Intelligent man, who acts with deliberation, always obtains good fruits. Therefore, O king, you should exert yourself. Fruits you wish to obtain is visible. You will surely obtain accomplished and agreeable sons.


vaiśampāyana uvāca
tacchrutvā tāpasavacaḥ pāṇḍuścintāparo ̍ bhavat
ātmani mṛgaśāpena jānannupahatāṁ kriyām

so ̍bravīd vijane kuntīṁ dharmapatnīṁ yaśasvinīm

apatyotpādane yatnamāpadi tvaṁ samarthaya


Vaiśampāyana said: Having heard these words of ascetics and remembering the loss of his procreative power owing to the curse of the deer, Pāṇḍu began to reflect. He told his lawfully wedded wife, illustrious Kuntī, in private: Try to rise an offspring at this emergency.


apatyaṁ nāma lokeṣu pratiṣṭhā dharmasaṁhitā
iti kuntī vidurdhīrāḥ śāśvataṁ dharmavādinaḥ
iṣṭaṁ dattaṁ tapastaptaṁ niyamaśca svanuṣṭhitaḥ
sarvamevānapatyasya na pāvanamihocyate


O kuntī! Wise expounders of eternal religion say that son is the source of virtuous fame in 3 worlds. Sacrifices, gifts in charity, ascetic penances and carefully observed vows do not free a sonless man from his sins.


so ̍ hamevaṁ viditvaitat prapaśyāmi śucismite
agapayaḥ śubhām̐llokān na prāpsyāmīti cintayan


O lady of sweet smiles! Knowing all this, I am certain that sonless as I am, I shall not obtain regions of felicity.


mṛgābhiśāpānnaṣṭaṁ me jananaṁ hyakṛtātmanaḥ
nṛśaṁsakāriṇo bhīru yathaivopahataṁ purā


O timid lady! As I was formerly addicted to cruel acts and led a vicious life. I have lost my power of procreation by the course of deer.


ime vai bandhudāyādāḥ ṣaṭ putrā dharmadarśane
ṣaḍevābāndhudāyādāḥ putrāstāñchṛṇu me pṛthe


O Pṛthā! Religious books mention 6 kinds of sons who are both heirs and kinsmen and 6 kinds more, who are not heirs, but kinsmen. I shall speak of them, listen to me.


svayaṁjātaḥ praṇītaśca tatsamaḥ putrikāsutaḥ

paunarbhavaśca kānīnaḥ bhaginyāṁ yaśca jāyate
dattaḥ krītaḥ kṛtrimaśca upagacchet svayaṁ ca yaḥ
sahoḍho jñātiretāśca hīnayonidhṛtaśca yaḥ


They are Aurasa - son begotten by one ̍s own self on his own wife, Praṇīta - son begotten on one ̍ s own wife by accomplished person, Parikṛta - son begotten on one ̍ s wife by a man for a pecuniary consideration, Punarbhava - son begotten on a wife after her husband ̍ s death, Kānin - son born in maidenhood, Kuṇḍa - son born of a women who had intercourse with 4 persons, Daatta - son given by another, Kṛta - son bought from another, Upakṛta - son coming to one out of gratitude, Svayam upāgata - son coming himself to give him away, Sahodha - son born of a pregnant bride, Hīna Yonidhṛta - son born of a wife of a lower caste.


pūrvapūrvatamābhāvaṁ matvā lipseta vai sutam
uttamādavarāḥ puṁsaḥ kāṅkṣante putramāpadi


On the failure of getting offspring of the first class, mother should try to get an offspring of the next class and so on. At the time of emergency - failure of offspring, men raise up sons by their accomplished younger brothers.


apatyaṁ dharmaphaladaṁ śreṣṭhaṁ vindanti mānavāḥ
ātmaśukrādapi pṛthe manuḥ svāyambhuvo ̍ bravīt


O Pṛthā! Self created Manu has said that men, failing to obtain son of their own, might raise up excellent virtue giving sons by others.


tasmāt praheṣyāmyadya tvāṁ hīnaḥ prajananāt svayam
sadṛśācchreyaso vā tvaṁ viddhyapatyaṁ yaśasvini


As I am destitute of the power of procreation, I command you to raise illustrious offspring by some men equal or superior to me.


śṛṇu kunti kathāmetāṁ śāradaṇḍāyinīṁ prati
sā vīrapatnī guruṇā nityuktā putrajanmani


O Kuntī! Hear the history of that wife of a hero, daughhter of Śāradaṇḍāyana, who raised offspring at the command of her lord.


puṣpeṇa prayatā snātā niśi kuntī catuṣpathe
varayitvā dvijaṁ siddhaṁ hutvā puṁsavane ̍ nalam


O Kuntī! After the bath, when her season came, she went at night to a place where 4 roads met. Worshipping a Brāhmaṇa, who was crowned with ascetic success, she poured libations in the fire of Puṁsavana.


karmaṇyavasite tasminsā tenaiva sahāvasat
tatra trīñjanayāmāsa durjayādīnmahārathān


After performing this, she lived with him, and thus were begotten on her 3 sons, Durjaya being the eldest.


tathā tvamapi kalyāṇi brāhmaṇāttapasādhikāt
manniyogādyata kṣipramapatyotpādanaṁ prati


O greatly fortunate lady! Like her, you too at my command raise offspring by some Brāhmaṇa, who is superior to me in ascetic merits.
