janamejaya uvāca
kathito dhārtarāṣṭrāṇāmārṣaḥ sambhava uttamaḥ
amanuṣyo manuṣyāṇāṁ bhavatā brahmavādinā
Janamejaya said: O utterer of Brahmā! You have recited excellent account of extraordinary births of the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra on Earth, the result of the boon of Ṛṣi.
nāmadheyāni cāpyeṣāṁ kathyamānāni bhāgaśaḥ
tvattaḥ śrutāni me brahman pāṇḍavánāṁ ca kīrtaya
O Brāhmaṇa! You have also told me their names according to their order of birth. I have heard all this from you. Now tell me all about Pāṇḍavas.
te hi sarve mahātmāno devarājaparākramāḥ
tvathaivāṁśāvataraṇe devabhāgāḥ prakīrtitāḥ
While reciting incarnations of celestials, Asuras and beings of other classes on Earth, you said that illustrious men, Pāṇḍavas, as powerful as kings of celestials themselves.
etadicchāmyahaṁ śrotumatimānuṣakarmaṇām
teṣāmājananaṁ sarvaṁ vaiśampāyana kīrtaya
I desire to hear all about those beings of extraordinary achievements, beginning from the moments of their births. O Vaiśampāyana! Narrate to me all their achievements.
vaiśampāyana uvāca
rājā pāṇḍurmahāraṇye mṛgavyālaniṣevite
caran maithunadharmasyaṁ dadarśa mṛgayūthapam
Vaiśampāyana said: O king! One day Pāṇḍu, while roaming in that great forest abounding in deer and other fierce animals, saw a large deer, leader of its herd, coupling with its mate.
tatastāṁ ca mṛgīṁ taṁ ca rukmapuṅkhaiḥ supatribhiḥ
nirvibheda śaraistīkṣṇaiḥ pāṇḍuḥ pañcabhirāśugaiḥ
Seeing them, Pāṇḍu pierced both with 5 of his sharp and swift arrows, winged with golden feathers.
sa ca rājan mahātejā ṛṣiputrastappodhanaḥ
bhāryayā saha tejasvī mṛgarūpeṇa saṁgataḥ
O king! He was greatly effulgent ascetic, son of a Ṛṣi in the form of that deer. This effulgent man was with his wife who was a deer.
saṁsaktaśca tayā mṛgyā mānuṣīmīrayan giram
kṣaṇena patito bhūmau vilalāpākulendrayaḥ
Wounded by Pāṇḍu while with mate, he fell down on thr ground in a moment and uttered cries that were human. He began to weep bitterly.
mṛga uvāca
kāmamanyuparītā hi buddhyā virahitā api
varjayanti nṛśaṁsāni pāpeṣvapi ratā narāḥ
na vidhiṁ grasate prajñā tu grasate vidhiḥ
vidhiparyāgatānarthān prājño na pratipadyate
Deer said: Even man, who are slaves of lust and anger, who are devoid of reason and who are ever sinful, never commit such a cruel act. Man ̍ s individual judgement does not prevail against the ordinance. Ordinance always prevails against individual judgement. Wise men never sanction anything discountenanced by the ordinance.
śaśvaddharmātmanā mukhye kule jātasya bhārata
kāmalobhābhibhūtasya kathaṁ te calitā matiḥ
O descendant of Bharata race! You are born in a dynasty that has ever been virtuous. How is it that you have lost your reason, ever powered by passion.
pāṇḍuruvāca
śatrūṇāṁ yā vadhe vṛttiḥ sā mṛgāṇāṁ vadhe smṛtā
rājñāṁ mṛga na māṁ mohāt tvaṁ garhayitumarhasi
Pāṇḍu said: O deer! Kings behave in the matter of killing animals of your species - deer, as they do in the matter of killing their foes. Therefore, you should not, reprove out of ignorance.
acchadmanā māyayā ca mṛgāṇāṁ vadha iṣyate
sa eva dharmo rājñāṁ tu taddhi tvaṁ kiṁ nu garhase
Animals of our species are killed by open or covert means. This is the practice of kings. Then why do you reprove me?
agastyaḥ satramāsīnaścakāra mṛgayāmṛṣiḥ
āraṇyān sarvadevebhyo mṛgān preṣan mahāvane
pramāṇadṛṣṭadharmeṇa kathamasmān vigarhase
agastyasyābhicāreṇa yuṣmākaṁ vihito vadhaḥ
Ṛṣi Agastya, while engaged in a great sacrifice, hunted deer in the great forest and offered every one of them to celestials. Agastya performed Homa with the fat of the deer. You have been killed according to such precedents. Why then do you reprove me?
mṛga uvāca
na ripūn vai samuddiśya vimuñcanti narāḥ śarān
randhra eṣāṁ viśeṣeṇa vadhaḥ kāle praśasyate
Deer said: Man do not throw their arrows even at their enemies when they are unprepared. There is a time for doing it. To kill at such a time is not censurable.
pāṇḍuruvāca
pramattamapramattaṁ vā vivṛtaṁ ghnanti caujasā
upāyairvividhaistīkṣṇaiḥ kasmānmṛga vigarhase
Pāṇḍu said: It is well known that men kill deer by various means, without the least regard whether they are prepared or unprepared. O deer! You should not, therefore, reprove me.
mṛga uvāca
nāhaṁ ghnantaṁ mṛgān rājan vigarhe cātmakāraṇāt
maithunaṁ tu pratīkṣyaṁ me tvayehādyānṛśaṁsyataḥ
Deer said: I do not blame you, because you have killed a deer, or because you have done me an injjury. Instead of doing such a cruel act, you should have waited till the completion of my intercourse.
saravbhūtihite kāle sarvabhūtepsite tathā
ko hi vidvān mṛgaṁ hanyāccarantaṁ maithunaṁ vane
Intercourse is agreeable to all creatures. It is productive of good to all. What man of learning is there who kills a deer engaged in intercourse in the forest?
asyāṁ mṛgyāṁ ca rājendra harṣānmaithunamācaram
puruṣārthaphalaṁ kartuṁ tat tvayā viphalīkṛtam
O king! I was joyfully engaged in intercourse with this mate to beget an offspring. You have made my that effort futile.
pauravāṇāṁ mahārāja teṣāmakliṣṭakarmaṇām
vaṁṣe jātasya kauravya nānurūpamidaṁ tava
O great king! Being born in the Pūru dynasty, ever famous for its pure acts and being a descendant of Kuru race, you should not have committed such an act.
nṛśaṁsaṁ karma sumahat sarvalokavigarhitam
asvargyamayaśasyaṁ cāpyadharmiṣṭhaṁ ca bhārata
O descendant of Bharata race! This act is extremely cruel, it deserves universal excretion. It is infamous and sinful and will certainly lead you to hell.
strībhogānāṁ viśeṣajñaḥ śāstradharmārthatattvavit
nārhastvaṁ surasaṁkāśa kartumasvargayamīdṛśam
You are well acquainted with pleasure of intercourse. You are also learned in Śāstras and the precepts of religion. You are like celestial. You should not have committed such an act, unworthy of heaven.
tvayā nṛśaṁsakartāraḥ pāpācārāśca mānavāḥ
nigrāhyāḥ pārthivaśreṣṭha trivargaparivarjitāḥ
O best of kings! Your duty is to chastise those who act cruelly, who are engaged in sinful practises and who are devoid of percepts of religion - Dharma, Artha, Kāma.
kiṁ kṛtaṁ te naraśreṣṭha māmihānāgasaṁ ghnatā
muniṁ mūlaphalāḥraṁ mṛgaveṣadharaṁ nṛpa
vasamānamaraṇyeṣu nityaṁ śamaparāyaṇam
tvayāhaṁ hiṁsito yasmāt tasmāt tvāmapyahaṁ śape
O best of men! O king! What I have done that you have killed me? I am Ṛṣi who lives on fruits and roots though in a form of a deer. I live in the fores always being disposed to peace. As you have killed me, I shall certainly curse you.
dvayornṛśaṁsakartāramavaśaṁ kāmamohitam
jīvitāntakaro bhāva evamevāgamiṣyati
Cruel as you have been to a couple, death will certainly overtake you as soon as you will feel the influence of desire.
ahaṁ ki kiṁdamo nāma tapasā bhāvito muniḥ
oyapatrapanmanuṣyāṇāṁ mṛgyāṁ maithunamācaram
mṛgo bhūtvā mṛgaiḥ sārdhaṁ carāmi gahane vane
na tu te brahmahatyeyaṁ bhaviṣyatyavijānataḥ
I am ascetic Ṛṣi named Kiṁdama. I was engaged in intercourse with this deer out of shame of men. Assuming the forrm of a deer I roam in deep forest in company with other female deer. Sin of killing a Brāhmaṇa, however, will not be yours, for you have done it not knowing me to be a Brāhmaṇa.
mṛgarūpadharaṁ hatvā mámevaṁ kāmamohitam
asya tu phalaṁ mūḍha prāpsyasīdṛśameva hi
As you have killed me in the form of a deer, when I was full of desire, so you, O foolish man, will certainly meet with the fate that has befallen me.
priyayā saha saṁvāpya kāmavimohitaḥ
pvamapsyāmavasthāyāṁ pretalokaṁ gamiṣyasi
When you will go to your dear one, full of desire, as was the case with me, you will, at that very moment, certainly go to the land of the dead.
antakāle hi saṁvāsaṁ yayā gantāsi kāntayā
pretarājapuraṁ prāptaṁ sarvabhūtaduratyayam
bhaktyā matimatāṁ śreṣṭha saiva tvānugamiṣyati
Your wife with whom you will join at your last moments, will also go with you with the reverence and affection to the ever unavoidable land of the dead.
vartamānaḥ sukhe duḥkhaṁ yathāhaṁ prāpitastvayā
tathā tvaṁ ca sukhaṁ prāptaṁ duḥkhamabhyāgamiṣyati
As I have been plunged into grief when I was happy, so you will also be afflicted with grief when in happiness.
vaiśampāyana uvāca
evamuktvā suduḥārto jīvitāt sa vyamucyata
mṛgaḥ pāṇḍuśca duḥkhārtaḥ kṣaṇena samapadyata
Vaiśampāyana said: Having said this, deer, affected with grief, gave up his life and Pāṇḍu also was plunged in grief at that moment.
vaiśampāyana uvāca
taṁ vyatītamatikramya rājā svamiva bāndhavam
sabharyaḥ śokaduḥkhārtaḥ paryadevayadāturaḥ
Vaiśampāyana said: After the death of the deer, king Pāṇḍu, like a friend, wept bitterly with his wives, being much afflicted with grief.
pāṇḍuruvāca
satāmapi kule jātāḥ karmaṇā vata durgatim
prāpnuvantyakṛtātmānaḥ kāmajālavimohitāḥ
Pāṇḍu said: Wicked men, though born in virtuous families, being illuded with passion, becomes overwhelmed with misery as the fruit of their own acts.
śaśvaddharmātmanā jāto bāla eva pitā mama
jīvitāntamanuprāptaḥ kāmātmaiveti naḥ śrutam
I have heard that my father, though begotten by a virtuous man, died when he was still a youth, only because a slave of lust.
tasya kāmātmanaḥ kṣetre rājñaḥ saṁyatavānṛṣiḥ
kṛṣṇadvaipāyanaḥ sākṣād bhagavān māmajījanat
In the field of that lustful king, I was begotten by Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana of truthful speech, who was like Brahmā himself.
tasyādya vyasane buddhiḥ saṁjāteyaṁ mamādhama
tyaktasya devairanayānmṛgayāṁ paridhāvataḥ
Being the son of such a man, with my heart devoted to sin, I lead wandering life in pursuit of deer. Gods have all forsaken me.
mokṣameva vyavasyāmi bandho vyasanaṁ mahat
suvṛttimanuvartiṣye tāmahaṁ pituravyayām
I shall now seek for salvation. My heart is a great slave of passion. Great impediments to salvation is desire to beget a children. I shall now adopt Brahmacarya, following example of my father.
atīva tapasā ātmānaṁ yojayiṣyāmyasaṁśayam
tasmādeko ̍ hamekākī ekaikasmin vanaspatau
caran bhaikṣyaṁ munirmuṇḍaścariṣyāmyāśramānimān
pāṁsunā samavacchannaḥ śūnyāgārakṛtālayaḥ
vṛkṣamūlaniketo vā tyaktasarvapriyāpriyaḥ
I shall certainly bring my passions under complete control by severe asceticism. Forsaking my wives and other relatives, shawing my head. I shall wander alone over the Earth, begging my food from the lords of the forests - trees. Forsaking every object of affection and aversion, covering my body with dust, I shall make the shelter of trees and deserted houses my home.
na śocan na prahṛṣyaṁśca tulyanindātmasaṁstutiḥ
nirāśīrnirnamaskāro nirdvandvo niṣparigrahaḥ
I shall never jield to the influence of sorrow or joy. Ishall regard praise and blame to be the same. I shall not seek benedictions or bows. I shall be in peace with all. I shall not accept gifts.
na cāpyavahasan kaccinna kurvan bhrukuṭīṁ kvacit
prasannavadano nityaṁ sarvabhūtahite rataḥ
I shall not mock anyone. Ishall not contact my brow at my body. I shall be ever cheerful. I shall be devoted to good of all creatures.
jaṅgamāṅgamaṁ sarvamahiṁsaṁścaturvidham
svāsu prajāsviva sadā samaḥ prāṇabhṛtāṁ prati
I shall not harm any of the 4 orders of creation, either mobile or immobile. I shall treat them all equally, as if they are my own children.
ekakālaṁ caran bhaikṣyaṁ kulāni daśa pañca vā
asambhave vā bhaikṣyasya carannanaśanānyapi
I shall daily beg my food from only 5 or 10 families. If it is impossible to get food thus, I shall remain fasting. I shall rather go with little food than to ask a man twice.
alpamalpaṁ ca bhuñjānaḥ pūrvālābhe na jātucit
anyānyapi caraṁllobhādalābhe sapta pūrayan
alābhe yadi vā lābhe samadarśā mahātapāḥ
If I do not obtain food after completing my round of 7 or 10 houses, Ishall not enlarge my round out of covetuousness, whether I obtain or fail to obtain alms, I shall remain a great ascetic equally unmoved.
vāsyaikaṁ takṣato bāhuṁ candanenaikamukṣataḥ
nākalyāṇaṁ na kalyāṇaṁ cintayannubhayostayoḥ
na jijīviṣuvat kiṁcinna mumūrṣuvadācaran
jīvitaṁ maraṇaṁ caiva nābhinandan na ca dviṣan
Cutting off my one arm with an axe and smearing of the other with sandal, both will be equally regarded by me as the same. I shall not desire good from one or evil from the other. I shall not be pleased with life or displeased with death. I shall neither wish to live or fear to die.
yāḥ kāścijjīvatā śakyāḥ kartumabhyudayakriyāḥ
tāḥ sarvāḥ samatikramya nimeṣādivyavasthitāḥ
tāsu cāpyanavasthāsu tyaktasarvendriyakriyaḥ
samparityaktadharmārthaḥ sunirṇiktātmmakalmaṣaḥ
Washing my keart of all sins, I shall certainly transcend those sacred rites productive of happiness that men perform at inauspicious moments. Ishall also abstrain from all acts of Dharma and Artha and from all those acts those who lead to gratification of senses.
nirmuktaḥ sarvapāpebhyo vyatītaḥ sarvavāgurāḥ
na vaśe kasyacit tiṣṭhan sadharmā mātariṣvanaḥ
Being freed from all sins and snares of the world, I shalll be as free as wind.
etayā satataṁ dhṛtyā carannevaṁprakārayā
dehaṁ saṁsthāpayiṣyāmi nirbhayaṁ mārgamāsthitaḥ
Acting always in this way and treading in the path of fearless, I shall at last lay down my life.
nāhaṁ sukṛpaṇe mārge svavīryakṣayaśocite
svadharmāt satatāpete careyaṁ vīryavarjitaḥ
I am destitute of power of begetting children. I shall not certainly deviate from the path of duty, in order to tread in the vile path of the world which is full of misery.
satkṛto ̍ satkṛto vāpi yo ̍ nyaṁ kṛpaṇacakṣuṣā
upaiti vṛttiṁ kāmātmā sa śunāṁ vartate pathi
Whether respected or disrespected by the world, that man who being desireless, becomes full of desire, behaves like a dog.
vaiśampāyana uvāca
evamuktvā suduḥkhārto niḥśvāsaparamo nṛpaḥ
avekṣamāṇaḥ kuntīṁ ca mādrīṁ sa samabhāṣata
Vaiśampāyana said: King, having said this in sorrow, sigted and looking at his wives Kuntī and Mādrī said:
kausalyā viduraḥ kṣattā rājā ca saha bandhubhiḥ
āryā satyavatī bhīṣmaste ca rājapurohitāḥ
brāhmaṇāśca mahātmānaḥ somapāḥ saṁśitavratāḥ
pauravṛddhāśca ye tatra nivasantyadāśrayāḥ
prasādya sarve vaktavyāḥ pāṇḍuḥ pravrajito vanam
After gratifying all, tell the princess of Kosalaa, Vidura, king with his friends, mother Satyavatī, royal priests, high souled, Soma drinking Brāhmaṇas of rigid vows and tose old men who live under our protection, that Pāṇḍu has retired into a forest!
niśamya vacanaṁ bharturvanava-se dhṛtātmanaḥ
tatsamaṁ vacanaṁ kuntī mādrī ca samabhāṣatām
Having heard these words of their husband who had fixed his mind to retire into a forest, both Kuntī and Mādrī addressed him in these proper words.
anyo ̍ pi hyāśramāḥ santi ye śakyā bharatarṣabha
āva-bhyāṁ dharmapatnībhyāṁ saha taptuṁ tapo mahat
O best of Bharata race! There are many other Āśramas - modes of life, in which you can perform with us your lawfully wedded wives, great asceticism.
śarīrasyāpi mokṣāya svargyaṁ prāpya mahāphalam
tvameva bhavitā bhartā svargasyāpi na saṁśayaḥ
In which you can obtain salvation of your body. You may obtain heaven as your reward. As great fruit of your action, you can certainly become the lord of heaven.
praṇidhāyendriyagrāmaṁ bhartṛlokaparāyaṇe
tyaktakāmasukhe hyāvāṁ tapsyāvo vipulaṁ tapaḥ
We will also perform great asceticism with our husband, controlling our passions and abandoning all desires and pleasures.
yadi cāvāṁ mahāprājña ytakṣyasi tvaṁ viśāmpate
adyaivāvāṁ prahāsyāvo jīvitaṁ nātra saṁśayaḥ
O greatly learned man! If you abandon us, we will then certainly give up our lives today.
Pāṇḍuruvāca
yadi vyavasitaṁ hyetad yuvayordharmasaṁhitam
svavṛttimanuvartiṣye tāmahaṁ pituravyayām
Pāṇḍu said: If your this determination be conformable to virtue, then I shall with both of you follow imperishable path of my father.
tyaktvā grāmyasukhāhāraṁ tapyamāno mahat tapaḥ
valkalī phalamūlāśī cariṣyāmi mahāvane
Abandoning luxuries of the village and towns, robed in barks of the trees and living on fruits and roots, practising severest asceticism, I shall roam in great forest.
agnau juhvannubhau kālāvubhau kālāvupaspṛśan
kṛśaḥ parimitāhāraścīracarmajaṭādharaḥ
Bathing in the morning and evening, I shall prform Homa. I shall reduce my body by eating sparingly. I shall wear rags and skins. I shall carry matted hair on my head.
śītavātātapasahaḥ kṣutpipāsānavekṣakaḥ
tapasā duścareṇedaṁ śarīramupaśoṣayan
ekāntaśīlī vimṛśan pakvāpakvena vartayan
pitṝn devāṁśca vanyena vāgnbhiradbhiśca tarpayan
Exposing myself to heat and cold, disregarding hunger andd thirst, I shall reduce my body by performing most difficult asceticism. I shall live on fruits, ripe or unripe. I shall be in contemplation. I shall worship Pitṝs and celestials with speech and fruits of the forest.
vānaprasthajanasyāpi darśanaṁ kulavāsinām
nāpriyāṇyācariṣyāmi kiṁ punargrāmavāsinām
I shall not see the dwellers of cities or dwellers of the forest. I shall not even harm them, not to speak of dwellers of villages.
evamāraṇyaśāstrāṇāmugramugrataraṁ vidhim
kāṅkṣamāṇo ̍ hamāsthāsye dehasyāsyā samāpanāt
I shall thus perform severest practises of Vanaprastha, performing the severer ones gradually, till lay down my body.
vaiśampāyana uvāca
ityevamuktvā bhārye te rājā kauravanandanaḥ
tataścūḍāmaṇiṁ niṣkamaṅgade kuṇḍalāni ca
prada-ya sarvaṁ viprebhyaḥ pāṇḍuḥ punarabhāṣata
Vaiśampāyana said: Having said this to his wives, descendant of Kuru, king Pāṇḍu, gave his jewel of the diadem, his necklace of precious gold, his bracelets, his earrings, his valuable robes, ornaments of the ladies to Brāhmaṇas, he then said:
gatvā nāgaputraṁ vācyaṁ pāṇḍuḥ pravrajito vanam
arthaṁ kāmaṁ sukhaṁ caiva ratiṁ ca paramātmikām
pratasthe sarvamutsṛjya sabhāryaḥ kurunandanaḥ
tatastasyānuyātāraste caiva paricārakāḥ
Going to Hāstinapura, inform all that Pāṇḍu, descendant of Kuru, has retired into the forest with his wives, abandoning wealth, desires, happiness and sexual appetite.
Then assembled followers and attendants.
śrutvā bharatasiṁhasya vividhāḥ karuṇā giraḥ
bhīmamārtasvaraṁ kṛtvā hāheti paricukruśuḥ
Hearing these and other sorrowful words of that lion of Bharata race, bewailed in grief and cried: Alas! O!
uṣṇamaśru vimuñcantastaṁ vihāya mahīpatim
yayurnāgapuraṁ tūrṇaṁ sarvama-da-ya tad dhanam
They shed hot tears to leave king. They left that forest and went to Hāstinapura, taking all the wealth with them.
te gatvā nagaraṁ rājño yathāvṛttaṁ mahātmanaḥ
kathayāṁcakrire rājñastad dhanaṁ vividhaṁ daduḥ
Going to the city, they told illustrious king all that had happened and gave him all the wealth.
śrutvā tebhyastataḥ sarvaṁ yathāvṛttaṁ mahāvane
dhṛtarāṣṭro naraśreṣṭhaḥ pāṇḍumevānvaśocata
Having heard all that had happened in great forest, the best of men, king Dhṛtarāṣṭra wept for Pānḍu.
na śayyāsanabhogeṣu ratiṁ vindati karhicit
bhrātṛśokasamāviṣṭastamevārthaṁ vicintayan
He derived no pleasure in comforts of his beds, seats and luxuries. Afflicted with the loss of his brother, he continually brooded over it.
rājaputrastu kauravya pāṇḍurmūlaphalāśanaḥ
jagāma saha patnībhyāṁ tato nāgaśataṁ girim
Descendant of Kuru, king Pāṇḍu, living on fruits and roots, went with his two wives to Nāgaśata mountains.
sa caitrarathamāsādya kālakūṭamatītya ca
himavantamatikramya prayayau gandhamādanam
Then he went to Caitraratha and then to Kālakūṭa, crossing Himalayas went to Gandhamādana.
rakṣyamāṇo mahābhūtaiḥ siddheśca paramarṣibhiḥ
uvāsa sa mahārāja sameṣu viṣameṣu ca
indradyumnasaraḥ prāpya haṁsakūṭamatītya ca
śataśṛṅge mahārāja tāpasaḥ samatapyata
Protected by Mahābhūtas, Siddhas, great Ṛṣis, that great king lived sometimes on the plain and sometimes on the hills. He then went to the lake Indradyumna and then, crossing Haṁsakūṭa, great king performed his penances on the mountain with hundred peaks.
