vaiśampāyana uvāca
viśeṣaṣārthī tato bhīṣmaḥ pautrāṇāṁ vinayepsayā
iṣvastrajñān paryapṛcchadācāryān vīryasammatān
nālpadhīrnámahābhāgastathānāstrakovidaḥ
nādevasattvo vinayet kurūnastre mahābalān
iti saṁcintya gāṅgeyastadā bharatasattamaḥ
droṇāya vedaviduṣe bhāradvājāya dhīmate
pāṇḍavān kauravāṁścaiva dadau śiṣyān nararṣabha
Vaiśampāyana said: being desirous of giving his grandsons superior education, Bhīṣma was in search for a Guru, who was endued with energy and who was well skilled in the science of arms. O best of Bharata race! Deciding that only one who was possessed of great intelligence, who was illustrious, who was a perfect master of the science of arms, who was as powerful as celestial, will be Guru of Kurus, son of Gaṅgā - Bhīṣma, placed Pāṇḍavas and Kurus under the tuition of the son of Bharadvāja, wise Droṇa, learned in all Vedas. Having been honoured according to the proper form by illustrious bhīṣma,
śāstrataḥ pūjitaścaiva samyak tena mahātmanā
sa bhīṣmeṇa mahābhāgastuṣṭo ̍ straviduṣāṁ varaḥ
That foremost of all men skilled in arms, that illustrious Droṇa, was pleased with reception given to him by great Bhīṣma and accepted them as disciples.
pratijagrāha tān sarvān śiṣyatvena mahāyaśāḥ
śikṣayāmāsa ca droṇo dhanurvedamaśeṣataḥ
te ̍ cireṇaiva kālena sarvaśāstraviśāradāḥ
babhūvaḥ kauravā rājan ghāṇḍavaścāmitaujasaḥ
Droṇa taught them the science of arms in all its branches. O king! Immeasurably powerful Pāṇḍavas and Kurus became within a very short time experts in use of all kinds of weapons.
