Yudhiṣṭhira un Bhīma discusses situation at Varaṇāvata

vaiśampāyana uvāca

tataḥ sarvāḥ prakṛtayo nagarād vāraṇāvatāt

sarvamaṅgalasaṁyuktā yathāśāstramatandritāḥ

śrutvā āgatān pāṇḍuputrān nānāyānaiḥ sahasraśaḥ

abhijagmurnaraśreṣṭhān śrutvaiva parayā mudā

Vaiśampāyana said: Hearing that Pāṇḍavas were coming, all the citizens came speedily by thousands out of the town Varaṇāvata with joy, on various conveyances taking with them all auspicious things as directed by Śāstras in order to receive those best of men.

te samāsādya kaunteyān vāraṇāvatakā janāḥ

kṛtvā jayāśiṣaḥ sarve parivāryāvatasthire

Coming to Kaunteyas, citizens of Varaṇāvata surrounded them and blessed them by uttering word Jaya! - Victory!

tairvṛtaḥ puruṣavyāghro dharmarājo yudhiṣthiraḥ

vibabhau devasaṁkāśo vajrapāṇirivāmaraiḥ

Being thus surrounded by them, that best of men, king of virtue, Yudhiṣṭhira, looked as effulgent as Indra in the midst of celestials.

satkṛtāścaiva pauraiste paurān satṛtya cānagha

alaṅkṛtaṁ janākīrṇaṁ viviśurvāraṇāvatam

Being welcomed by the citizens and welcoming them in return, those sinless ones - Pāṇḍavas, entered populous and ornamented Varaṇāvata.

te praviśya purīṁ vīrāstūrṇaṁ jagmuratho gṛhān

brāhmaṇānāṁ mahīpālaṁ ratānāṁ sveṣu karmasu

Entering the town, O king! Those heroes first went to the houses of Brāhmaṇas engaged in their proper duties.

 nagarādhikṛtānāṁ ca gṛhāṇi rathināṁ tadā

upatasthurnaraśreṣṭhā vaiśyaśūdragṛhāṇyapi

Then those best of men went to the houses of officials in charge of the town. Then they went to the houses of car warriors, then to those of Vaiśyas and then even to those of Śūdras.

arcitāśca naraiḥ pauraiḥ pāṇḍavā bharatarṣabha

jagmurāvasathaṁ paścāt purocanapurassarāḥ

O best of Bharata race! Thus adored by the citizens, Pāṇḍavas went to their house with Purocana wlking at the head of procession.

tebhyo bhakṣyāṇi pānāni śayanāni śubhāni ca

āsanāni ca mukhyāni pradadau sa purocanaḥ

Purocana gave them first class food and drink, beds, carpets and seats.

tarta te stakṛtāstena sumahārhaparicchadāḥ

upāsyamānāḥ puruṣairūṣuḥ puranivāsibhiḥ

Being served by Purocana and adored by the citizens, Pāṇḍavas, attired in costly robes, lived there.

daśarātroṣitānāṁ tu tatra teṣāṁ purocanaḥ

nivedayāmāsa gṛhaṁ śivākhyamaśivaṁ tadā

When they had lived there for 10 nights, Purocana spoke to them about the house and called it Blessed, though really it was unblessed.

tatra te puruṣavyāghrā viviśuḥ saparicchadāḥ

purocanasya vacanāt kailāsamiva guhyakāḥ

Thereupon those best of men, attired in costly garments, entered that house at the request of Purocana, as Guhyakas enter those oh Kailāsa mauntain.

taccāgāramabhiprekṣya sarvadharmabhṛtāṁ varaḥ

uvācāgneyamityevaṁ bhīmasenaṁ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ

Inspecting that house, that foremost of men, Yudhiṣṭhira, said to Bhīmasena that the house was made of inflamable materials.

jighāṇo ̍ sya vasāgandhaṁ sarpirjatuvimiśritam

kṛtaṁ hi vyaktamāgneyamidaṁ veśma paraṁtapa

Yudhiṣṭhira said: O chastiser of foes! From the smell of fat and ghee mixed with lac, it is evident that this house is made of inflamable materials.

śaṇasarjarasaṁvyaktamānīya gṛhakarmaṇi

muñjabalvajavaṁśādi dravyaṁ sarvaṁ ghṛtokṣitam

ślpibhiḥ sukṛtaṁ hyāptairvinītairveśmakarmaṇi

viśvastaṁ māmayaṁ pāpo dagdhukāmaḥ purocanaḥ

tathā hi vartate mandaḥ suyodhanavase sthitaḥ

imāṁ tu tāṁ mahābuddhirviduro dṛṣṭavāṁstathā

āpadaṁ tena māṁ sa sambodhitavān purā

te vayaṁ bodhitāstena nityamasmaddhitaiṣiṇā

pitrā manīyasā snehād buddhimanto ̍ śivaṁ gṛham

anāryaiḥ sukṛtaṁ gūḍhairduryodhanavaśānugaiḥ

By the help of trusted and well skilled artisans, enemies have nicely built this house with hemp, health, straw and Purocana desires to burn me after inspiring me with confidence. Wicked man, therefore, lives here, obedient to instructions of Duryodhana. Greatly intelligent Vidura knew this danger. Therefore, O Pārtha, he told me of it beforehand. Knowing this, that well wisher of ours, younger brother of our father, out of affection for us, has told us about this house, so full of danger and constructed by wretches under Duryodhana, who is acting secretly from behind.

bhīma uvāca

yadīdaṁ gṛhamāgneyaṁ vihitaṁ manyate bhavān

tathaiva sādhu gacchāmo yatra pūrvoṣitā vayam

Bhīma said: If this house is known to you as inflammable, then let us go to the place where we lived first.

yudhiṣṭhira uvāca

iha yattairnirākārairvastavyamiti rocaye

apramattairvicivadbhirgatiṣṭāṁ dhruvamitaḥ

Yudhiṣṭhira said: I think, we should rather live here, seeming unsuspicious, but remain vary cautious and keep our senses awake and at the same time seek for the means of escape.

yadi vindeta cākāramasmākaṁ sa purocanaḥ

kṣiprakārī tato bhūtvā pradahyādapi hetutaḥ

If Purocana finds from our demeanour that we have learned his design, he may suddenly burn us to death by taking immediately steps.

nāyaṁ bibhetyupakrośādadharmad vā purocanaḥ

tathā hi vartate mandaḥ suyodhanavaśe sthitaḥ

Purocana cares very little for obloquy and sin. Wretch lives here in obedience to instructions of Duryodhana.

api ceha pradagdheṣu bhīmo ̍ smāsu pitāmahaḥ

kopaṁ kurtāt kimarthaṁ vā kauravān kopayīta saḥ

If we are burnt, will grandfather Bhīṣma be angry? Why would he make Kurus angry with him by showing his anger.

athavāpīha dagdheṣu bhīmo ̍ smākaṁ pitāmahaḥ

dharma ityeva kupyeran ye cānye kurupuṅgavāḥ

It may be that if we are burnt, our grandfather Bhīṣma and other best men of Kuru race may be indignant for the sake of virtue.

vayaṁ tu yadi dāhasya bibhyataḥ pradravemahi

spaśairnirghātayet sarvān rājyalubdhaḥ suyodhanaḥ

If we fly from this place from the fear of being burnt, Duryodhana, covetuous for kingdom, will surely bring about our death by the means of spies.

apadasthān pade tiṣṭhannapakṣān pakṣasaṁsthitaḥ

hīnakośān mahākośaḥ prayogairghātayed dhruvam

tadasmābhirimaṁ pāpaṁ taṁ ca pāpaṁ suyodhanam

vañcayadbhirnivastavyaṁ channāvāsaṁ kvacit kvacit

Wicked Durodhana has rank, power, friends, allies and wealth, but we have none. He can certainly destroy us by adopting many means. Deceived this wretch and that wretch also, let us live in disguise for some time.

te vayaṁ mṛgayāśīlāśrāma vasudhāmimām

tathā no viditā mārgā bhaviṣyanti palāyatām

Let us lead a life of hunting, wandering over the Earth. We shall then be aware of all the paths that exist for escape.

bhaumaṁ ca bilamadyaiva karavāma susaṁvṛtam

gūḍhaśvāsānna nastatra hutāśaḥ sampradhakṣyati

We shall dig in all secrecy, this very day a subterranean passage in the room. If we can keep it secret from others, fire will not be able to consume us.

vasato ̍ tra yathā cāsmānna budhyeta purocanaḥ

pauro vāpi janaḥ kaścit tathā kāryamatandritaiḥ

Therefore we will live here and act in such a way as Purocana and citizens of Varaṇāvata may not know what we are doing.
