Funeral pyre for Pāṇḍu and Mādrī

 vaiśampāyana uvāca

pāṇḍoruparamaṁ dṛṣṭvā devakalpā maharṣayaḥ
tato mantravidaḥ sarve mantrayāṁcakrire mithaḥ


Vaiśampāyana said: Ṛṣis, who were all celestial like and wise in council, seeing the death of Pāṇḍu, consulted with one another.


hitvā rājyaṁ ca rāṣṭraṁ ca sa mahātmā mahāyaśāḥ
asmin sthāne tapastaptvā tāpasāñśaraṇaṁ gataḥ


Ṛṣis said: High souled and illustrious Pāṇḍu, abandoning his sovereignty and kingdom, came here to practice asceticism and received protection of ascetics.


sa jātamātrān putrāṁśca dārāṁśca bhavatāmiha
prādayopanidhiṁ rājā pāṇḍuḥ svargamito gataḥ


King Pāṇḍu has gone to heaven, leaving his wife and infant sons as a trust in our hands.


tasyemānātmajān dehaṁ bhāryāṁ ca sumahātmanaḥ
svarāṣṭraṁ gṛhya gacchāmo dharma eṣa hi naḥ smṛtaḥ


It is now our duty to go to his kingdom with these his sons, his body - unburnt portion and his wife.


vaiśampāyana uvāca
te parasparamamantrya devakalpā maharṣayaḥ
pāṇḍoḥ putrān puraskṛtya nagaraṁ nāgasāhvayam
udāramanasaḥ siddhā gamane cakrire manaḥ
bhīṣmāya pāṇḍavān dātuṁ dhr-tarāṣṭrāya caiva hi


Vaiśampāyana said: Thus consulting with one another, those god like Ṛṣis of magnanimous hearts and of ascetic success resolved to go to the city of Hāstinapura with sons of Pāṇḍu in their front and to place them in the hands of Dhṛtarāṣṭra and Bhīṣma.


tasminneva kṣaṇe sarve tānādāya pratasthire
pāṇḍordārāṁśca putrāṁ śarīre te ca tāpasāḥ


Ascetics started at that very moment, taking with them boys, 2 bodies and Kuntī.


sukhinī sāpurā bhūtvā satataṁ putravatsalā
prapannā dīrghamadhvānaṁ saṁkṣiptaṁ tadamanyata


Affectionate mother, Kuntī, though she had along led a most comfortable life, now regarded long journey as being very short.


sā tvadīrgheṇa kālena samprāptā kurujāṅgalam
vardhamānapuradvāramāsasāda yaśasvinī


Arriving at Kurujāṅgala within a very short time, illustrious Kuntī presented herself at the principal gate.


dvāriṇaṁ tāpasā ūcū rājānaṁ ca prakāśaya
te tu gatvā kṣaṇenaiva sabhāyāṁ viniveditāḥ


Ascetics told gate keepers: Go, inform king!
They went in a moment to the royal court and informed king.


taṁ cāraṇasahasrāṇāṁ munīnāmāgamaṁ tadā
śrutvā nāgapure nṛṇā vismayaḥ samapadyata


Citizens of Hāstinapura were filed with wonder on hearing that thousands of Cāraṇas and Ṛṣis had arrived at their city.


muhūrtedita āditye sarve bālapuraskṛtāḥ
sadārāstāpasān draṣṭuṃ niryayuḥ puravāsinaḥ


It was soon after sunrise that citizens all came with their wives and children, placing them in front, to see these ascetics.


strīsaṅghāḥ kṣatrasaṅghāśca yānasaṅghasamāsthitāḥ
brāhmaṇaiḥ saha nirjagmurbrāhmaṇānāṁ ca yoṣitaḥ


Seated on thousands of cars and conveyances, thousands of Kṣatriyas and Brāhmaṇas came out with their wives.


tathā viḍ śudrasaṅghānāṁ mahān vyatikaro ̍ bhavat
na kaścidakarodīrṣyāmabhavan dharmabuddhayaḥ


Crowd of Vaiśyas and Śūdras was very large. Vast crowd was very peaceful, because every one of them was inclined to piety.


tathā bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavaḥ somadatto ̍ tha bāhlikaḥ
prajñācakṣuśca rājarṣiḥ kṣattā ca viduraḥ svayam


Son of Śāntanu, Bhīṣma, Somadatta or Bāhlīka, Dhṛtarāṣṭra with his prophetic eyes and Vidura himself.


sā ca satyavatī devī kausalyā ca yaśasvinī
rājadāraiḥ parivṛtā gāndhārī cāpi niryayau


Venerable Satyavatī, illustrious princess of Kausalya and Gāndhārī, surrounded by their maids, all came out to the royal gate.


dhṛtarāṣṭrasya dāyādā duryodhanapuaogamāḥ
bhūṣitā bhūṣaṇaiścitraiḥ śatasaṁkhyā viniryayuḥ


100 sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, with Duryodhana at their head, all decked with various ornaments, also came out.


tān maharṣigaṇān dṛṣṭvā śirobhirabhivādya ca
upopaviviśuḥ sarve kauravyāḥ sapurohitāḥ


Seeing great Ṛṣis, Kaurāvas with their priests bowed down their heads in salutations and they all took their seats before Ṛṣis.


tathaiva śirasā bhūmāvabhivādya praṇamya ca
upopaviviśuḥ sarve paurā jānapadā api


All the citizens also, bowing down their heads touching the ground in salutions, took their seats.


tamakūjamabhijñāya janaughaṁ sarvaśastadā
pūjayitvā yathānyāyaṁ pādyenārghyeṇa ca prabho
bhīṣmo rājyaṁ ca rāṣṭraṁ ca maharṣibhyo nyavedayat
teṣāmatho vṛddhatamaḥ pratyutthāya jaṭājinī
ṛṣīṇāṁ matamājñāya maharṣiridamabravīt


O lord! Bhīṣma, seeing that vast crowd perfectly still, duly worshipped those ascetics by offering them water to wash their feet and customary Arghya. He then spoke to them about the sovereignty and kingdom. Thereupon, eldest of ascetics with matted locks and skin cloth stood up and with concurrence of other great Ṛṣis, spoke thus:


yaḥ sa kauravya dāyādaḥ pāṇḍurnāma narādhipaḥ
kāmabhogān parityajya śataśṛṅgamito gataḥ


Descendant of Kuru, king, named Pāṇḍu, after abandoning pleasure and luxury, went to the mountain with thousand peaks.


brahmacaryavratasthasya tasya divyena hetunā
sākṣād dharmādayaṁ putrastatra jāto yudhiṣṭhiraḥ


he observed there a vow of Brahmacarya, but for some purpose of celestials, his eldest son Yudhiṣṭhira was born, begotten by Dharma himself.


tathainaṁ balināṁ śreṣṭhaṁ tasya rājño mahātmanaḥ
mātariśvā dadau putraṁ bhīmaṁ nāma mahābalam


Then that high souled king was given another greatly powerful son by Vāyu. This is that foremost of mighty men, Bhīma.


puruhūtādayaṁ jajñe kuntyāmeva dhanaṁjayaḥ
yasya kīrtirmaheṣvāsān sarvānabhibhaviṣyati


This other son, begotten by Indra on Kuntī is Arjuna - Dhanañjaya, whose achievements will humble all bow men in the world.


yau tu mādrī maheṣvāsāvasūta puruṣottamau
aśvibhyāṁ puruṣavyāghrāvimau tāvapi paśyata


Look at these two best of men, great bowmen, twins, who were begotten by Aśvinīs on Mādrī.


caratā dharmanityena vanavāsaṁ yaśasvinā
naṣṭaḥ paitāmaho vaṁśaḥ pāṇḍunā punaruddhṛtaḥ


Almost extinct race of his forefathers was thus revived by illustrious Pāṇḍu, leading in piety life of a recluse.


putrāṇāṁ janmavṛddhiṁ ca vaidikādhyayanāni ca
paśyantaḥ satataṁ pāṇḍoḥ parāṁ prītimavāpsyatha


Birth, growth and Vedic stodies of these sons of Pāṇḍu will no doubt give you much pleasure.


vartamānaḥ satāṁ vṛtte putralābhamavāpya ca
pitṛlokaṁ gataḥ pāṇḍuritaḥ saptadaśe ̍ hani


Steadily adhering to the path of virtuous and wise and leaving behind him these children, Pāṇḍu has gone to the land of Pitṛs.


taṁ citāgatamājñāya vaiśvānaramukhe hutam
praviṣṭā pāvakaṁ mādrī hitvā jīvitamātmanaḥ


Seeing him placed on the funeral pyre and about to be burnt down, his wife Mādrī entered the fire, thus sacrificing her life.


sā gatā saha tenaiva patilokamanuvratā
tasyāstasya ca yat kāryaṁ kriyatāṁ tadanantaram


She was thus gone to the land of Pati - reserved for chaste wives. Perform now these rites that should be performed for them.


ime tayoḥ śarīre dve putrāśceme tayorvarāḥ
kriyābhiranugṛhyantāṁ saha mātrā paraṁtapāḥ


These are bodies - unburnt, there also are their sons, chastisers of foes, with their mother. Let them be received in due honour.


pretakārye nivṛtte tu pitṛmedhaṁ mahāyaśāḥ
labhatāṁ sarvadharmajñaḥ pāṇḍuḥ kurukulodvahaḥ


After completion of first first funeral rites, let virtuous Pāṇḍu, supporter of dignity of Kuru race, gain Pitṛmedha - blissful region of Pitṛs.


vaiśampāyana uvāca
evamuktvā kurūn sarvān kurūṇāmeva paśyatām
kṣenāntarhitāḥ sarve tāpasā guhyakaiḥ saha


Vaiśampāyana said: Having said this to Kurus, ascetics with Ṛṣis, Guhyakas instantly disappeared in the very sight of Kurus.


gandharvanagarākāraṁ tathaivāntarhitaṁ punaḥ
ṛṣisiddhagaṇaṁ dṛṣṭvā vismayaṁ te paraṁ yayuḥ


Seeing Ṛṣis disappear in their sight like cities of Gandharvas, citizens were filled with wonder and astonishment and returned to their homes.


dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca
pāṇḍorvidura sarvāṇi pretakāryāṇi kāraya
rājavad rājasiṁhasya mādryāścaiva viśeṣataḥ


Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: O Vidura! Perform funeral ceremonies of that lion of kings, Pāṇḍu and also Mādrī in all proper form.


paśūn vāsāṁsi ratnāni dhanāni vividhāni ca
pāṇḍoḥ prayaccha mādryāśca yebhyo yāvacca vāñchitam
yathā ca kuntī satkāraṁ kuryānmādryāstathā kuru
yathā na vāyurnādityaḥ paśyetāṁ tāṁ susaṁvṛtām


For the good of their souls, distribute cattle, cloths, gems and all kinds of wealth and give everyone as much as he asks. Make arrangements also for Kuntī ̍ s performance of the last rites of Mādrī in such a way as will please her. Let Mādrī ̍ s body be so carefully covered that neither sun nor wind may see it.


na śocyaḥ pāṇḍuranaghaḥ praśasya sa narādhipaḥ
yasya pañca sutā vīrā jātāḥ surasutopamāḥ


Do not lament for sinless Pāṇḍu. He was worthy king and has left behind him 5 sons like celestial children.


vaiśampāyana uvāca
vidurastaṁ tathetyuktvā bhīṣmeṇa saha bhārata
pāṇḍuṁ saṁskārayāmāsa deśe paramapūjite


Vaiśampāyana said: O descendant of Bharata race! Vidura said: Be it so! and he with Bhīṣma performed funeral ceremony of Pāṇḍu on a sacred spot.


tatastu nagarāt tūrṇamājyagandhapuraskṛtāḥ
nirhṛtāḥ pāvakā dīptāḥ pāṇḍo rājan purohitaiḥ


O king! Without loss of time, priests went out of the city carrying with them, last fire for Pāṇḍu, fragrant and blazing fire, fed with ghee.


athaināmārtavaiḥ puṣpairgandhaiśca vividhairvaraiḥ
śivikāṁ tāmalaṁkṛtya vāsasā ̍ cchādya sarvaśaḥ
tāṁ tathā tābhitāṁ mālyairvāsobhiśca mahādhanaiḥ
amātyā jñātayaścainaṁ suhṛdaścopatasthire
nṛsiṁhaṁ narayuktena paramālaṁkṛtena tam
avahan yānamukhyena saha mādryā susaṁyatam


Friends, relatives, adherents, wrapping it up with cloth, decked body of the king with flowers of the season and sprinkled over it various perfumes. They decked hearse also with garlands and rich hangings, then placing bodies of king and queen on excellent heir, decked out so brightly. They caused it to be carried on the shoulders of men.


pāṇḍureṇātapatreṇa cāmaravyajanena ca
sarvavāditranādaiśca samalañcakrire tataḥ


With white umbrella held, over the hearse, with waving yak tails, with sounds of various musical instruments, whole scene looked bright and grand.


ratnāni cāpyupādāya bahūni śataśo narāḥ
pradaduḥ kāṅkṣamāṇebhyaḥ pāṇḍostasyaurdhvadehike


Many hundreds of men began to distribute gems among the crowd at the time of funeral ceremony of Pāṇḍu.


athacchatrāṇi śubhrāṇi bṛhanti ca

ājahnuḥ kauravasyārthe vāsāṁsi rucirāṇi ca


While umbrellas, large yak tails and beautiful robes were then brought for the dead Kaurāva.


athacchatrāṇi śubhrāṇi cāmarāṇi bṛhanti ca
ājahnuḥ kauravasyārthe vāsāṁsi rucirāṇi ca
yājakaiḥ śuklavāsobhirhūyamānā hutāśanāḥ
agacchannagratastasya dīpyamānāḥ svalaṅkṛtāḥ
brāhmaṇāḥ kṣatriyā vaiśyāḥ śūdrāścaiva sahasraśaḥ
rudantaḥ śokasaṁtaptā anujagmurnarādhipam


Priests, clad in white, walked in the van of procession,pouring libations of ghee on the sacred fire, blazing in ornamental vessel. Thousands of Brāhmaṇas, Kṣatriyas, Vaiśyas and followed king, weeping in grief.


ayamasmānapāhāya duḥkhe cādhāya śāśvate
kṛtvā cāsmānanātāṁśca kva yāsyati narādhipaḥ


Citizens said: O king! Where do you go, leaving us behind and making us miserable and wretched forewer?


krośantaḥ pāṇḍavāḥ sarve bhīṣmo vidura eva ca
ramaṇīye vanoddeśe gaṅgātīre same śubhe
nyāsayāmāsuratha tāṁ śibikāṁ satyavādinaḥ
sabhāryasya nṛsiṁhasya pāṇḍorakliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ


Bhīṣma, Vidura and sons of Pāṇḍu all wept aloud. They at last came to a charming and holy wood on the banks of Gaṅgā. There they laid down the hearse on which truthful, lion hearted and pious king and his wife lay.


tatastasya śarīraṁ tu sarvagandhādhivāsitam
śucikālīyakādigdhaṁ divyacandanarūṣitam
paryaṣiñcañjalenāśu śātakumbhamayairghaṭaiḥ
candanena ca śuklena sarvataḥ samalepayan
kālāguruvimiśreṇa tathā tuṅgarasena ca
athainaṁ deśajaiḥ śuklairvāsobhiḥ samayojayan


They then besmeared bodies with all kinds of perfumes. They brought water in golden vessels and washed his body. Then they again smeared with white sandal. They then dressed them in white dress made of national fabrics and smeared them with Kālāguru mixed with Tuṅgarasa - sort of perfume.


saṁchannaḥ sa tu vāsobhirjīvanniva narādhipaḥ
śuśubhe sa naravyāghro mahārhaśayanocitaḥ


With new dress on, king appeared like a living man, as if he was only sleeping on a costly bed.


yājakairabhyanujñāte pretakarmaṇyanuṣṭhite
ghṛtāvasiktaṁ rājānaṁ saha mādryā svalaṅkṛtam
tuṅgapadmakamiśreṇa candanena sugandhinā
anyaiśca vividhairdhargandhairvidhinā samadāhayan


When other funeral ceremonies weree over, Kaurāvas, with direction of their priests, set fire to the bodies of the king and Mādrī, which had been besmeared with ghee and decked with ornaments. They burnt them with fragrant Sandal woods which was besmeared with Tuṅgapadma and other perfumes.


tatastayoḥ śarīre dve dṛṣṭvā mohavaśaṁ gatā
hā hā putreti kausalyā papāta sahasā bhuvi


Seeing the bodies in flames, Kausalya cried out: O my son! O my son! and she fell senseless on the ground.


tāṁ prekṣya patitāmārtāṁ paurajānapado janaḥ
ruroda duḥkhasaṁtapto rājabhaktyā kṛpānvitaḥ


Seeing her prostrate on the ground citizens and other people wept in grief or affection for the king.


kuntyāścaivārtanādena sarvāṇi ca vicukruśuḥ
mānuṣaiḥ saha bhūtāni tiryagyonigatānyapi


Beasts and birds bewailed with men at lamentations of Kuntī.


tathā bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavo viduraśca mahāmatiḥ
sarvaśaḥ kauravāścaiva prāṇadan bhṛśaduḥkhitāḥ


Then son of Śāntanu, Bhīṣma, high souled Vidura and all other Kurus became disconsolate in grief and sorrow.


tato bhīṣmo ̍ tha vidurorājā ca saha pāṇḍavaiḥ
udakaṁ cakrire tasya sarvāśca kuruyoṣitaḥ
cukraśuḥ pāṇḍavāḥ sarve bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavastathā
viduro jñātayaścaiva cakruścāpyudakakriyāḥ


Then Bhīṣma, Vidura, Dhṛtarāṣṭra with Pāṇḍavas and all Kuru ladies performed water ceremony of Pāṇḍu. All Pāṇḍavas grieved for their father. Bhīṣma, Vidura and other relatives all grieved, all of them performed water ceremony.


kṛtodakáṁstānādāya pāṇḍavāñchokakarśitān
sarvāḥ prakṛtayo rājan śocamānā nyavārayan


When water ceremony was over, people, filled with grief, began to console bereaved sons of Pāṇḍu.


yathaiva pāṇḍavā bhūmau suṣupuḥ saha bāndhavaiḥ
tathaiva nāgarā rājan śiśiyare brāhmaṇādayaḥ
tadgatānandamasvasthamākumāramahṛṣṭavat
babhūva pāṇḍavaiḥ sārdhaṁ nagaraṁ dvādaśa kṣapāḥ


Pāṇḍavas slept on the ground with their friends and relatives. O king! Seeing this, Brāhmaṇas and other citizens also gave their bed. Young and old, all men grieved with Pāṇḍavas and passed 12 days in mourning.


vaiśampāyana uvāca
tataḥ kuntī ca rājā ca bhīṣmaśca saha bandhubhiḥ
daduḥ śrāddhaṁ tadā pāṇḍoḥ svadhāmṛtamayaṁ tadā


Vaiśampāyana said: Then Bhīṣma, king Dhṛtarāṣṭra and Kuntī with their friends, celebrated Śrāddha of Pāṇḍu and offered ambrosial Piṇḍa.


kurūṁśca vipramukhyāṁśca bhojayitvā sahasraśaḥ
ratnaughān vipramukhyebhyo dattvā grāmavarāṁstathā


They feasted Kurus and also many thousands of Brāhmaṇas, whom they gave many gems and much wealth with many villages.


kṛtaśaucāṁstatasvāṁstu pāṇḍavān bharatarṣabhān
ādāya viviśuḥ sarve puraṁ vāraṇasāhvayam


Thus being cleansed to Hāstinapura with those best of Bharata race, Pāṇḍavas.


satataṁ smānuśocantastameva bharatarṣabham
paurajānapadāḥ sarve mṛtaṁ svamiva bāndhavam


All the citizens and people bewailed for that best of Bharata race, Pāṇḍu, as if they had lost their own relative.
