Daughter and son speaks too

 vaiśampāyana uvāca

tayorduḥkhitayorvākyamatimātraṁ niśamya tu

tato duḥkhaparītāṅgī kanyā tāvabhyabhāṣata


Vaiśampāyana said: Having heard these words of her affected parents, daughter was filled with grief and she spoke to them thus:


kimevaṁ bhṛśaduḥkhārtau rorūyetāmanāthavat

mamāpi śrūyatāṁ vākyaṁ śrutvā ca kriyatāṁ kṣamam


Daughter said: Why are you so sorrowful? Why are you weeping, as if you have none? Listen to my words and hearing them, do what is proper.


dharmato ̍ haṁ parityājyā yuvayornātra saṁśayaḥ

tyaktavyāṁ māṁ parityajya trāhi sarvaṁ mayaikayā


There is no doubt that you will one time abandon me by the dictates of virtue. Abandon me who am to be abandoned and thus save all by sacrificing me alone!


ityarthamiṣyate ̍ patyaṁ tārayiṣyati māmiti

asminnupasthite kāle taradhvaṁ plavanmayā


Men desire for children hoping that they will save them. Cross this stream of your difficulty by me!


iha vā tārayed durgāduta vā pretya bhārata

sarvathā tārayet putraḥ putra ityucyate budhaiḥ


Child saves his parents in this world and in the next. Therefore, a child is called by the learned Putra.


ākāṅkṣante ca dauhitrān mayi nityaṁ pitāmahāḥ

tat svayaṁ vai paritrāsye rakṣantī jīvitaṁ pituḥ


My forefathers always desire to have daughter ̍ s son by me to save them from hell. I shall myself save them by saving life of my father.


bhrātā ca mama bālo ̍ yaṁ gate lokamamuṁ tvayi

acireṇaiva kālena vinaśyeta na saṁśayaḥ


My brother is but of tender years. There is no doubt that he will die soon after your death.


tato ̍ pi hi gate svargaṁ vinaṣṭe ca mamānuje

piṇḍaḥ pitṛṇāṁ vyucchidyet tat teṣāṁ vipriyaṁ bhavet


If you, my father, ascend to heaven, if my brother dies, Piṇḍa - funeral cake, for Pitṛs, will be stopped and it will be most unfavourable act of theirs.


pitrā tyaktā tathā mātrā bhrātrā cāhamasaṁśayam

duḥkhid duḥkhataraṁ prāpya mriyeyamatathocitā


Having been abandoned by my father, brother and also my mother, I shall from misery to greater misery and I shall finally perish in great distress. 


tvayi tvaroge nirmukte mātā bhrātā ca me śiśuḥ

saṁtānaścaiva piṇḍaśca pratiṣṭhāsyatyasaṁśayam


There is no doubt that if you can save yourself, my mother and my child brother and also Piṇḍa will be perpetuated.


ātmā putraḥ sakhā bhāryā kṛcchraṁ tu duhitā kila

sa kṛcchrānmocayātmānaṁ māṁ ca dharme niyojaya


Son is one ̍ s own self. Wife is one ̍ s friend. Daughter is a source of troble. Save yourself by sacrificing that cause of troble and set me on the path of virtue!


anāthā kṛpaṇā bālā tatrakvacanagāminī

bhaviṣyāmi tvayā tāta vihīnā kṛpaṇā sadā


 O father! I am but a girl being abandoned by you. I shall be helpless and miserable and I would have to go anywhere and everywhere.




athavāhaṁ kariṣyāmi kulasyāsya vimocanam

phalasaṁsthā bhaviṣyāmi kṛtvā karma suduṣkaram


I shall, therefore, save my race and I shall acquire merit that difficult work brings in.


athavā yāsyase tatra tyaktvā māṁ dvijasattama

pīḍitāhaṁ bhaviṣyāmi tadavekṣasva māmapi


O best of twice born! Leaving me behind, if you go to Rākṣasas, I shall be very much pained. Therefore, be kind to me.


tadasmadarthaṁ dharmārthaṁ prasavārthaṁ sa sattama

ātmānaṁ pararakṣasva tyaktavyaṁ māṁ ca saṁtyaja


O excellent man! Abandoning me who am to be one day abandoned, save yourself for our sake and for the sake of virtue and your race!


avaśyakaraṇīye ca mā tvāṁ kālo ̍ tyagādayam

kiṁ tvataḥ paramaṁ duḥkhaṁ yad vayaṁ svargate tvayi

yācamānāḥ parādannaṁ paridhāvemahi śvavat

tvayi tvaroge nirmukte kleśādasmāt sabāndhave

amṛte casatī loke bhaviṣyāmi sukhānvitā


There should be delay in doing that which is inevitable! What could be more painful to us than your ascending to heaven? Then we will have to beg our food from others like dogs. If you are saved with your friends, dear ones, I shall pass my time in heaven and bliss.


itaḥ pradāne devāśca pitaraśceti na śrutam

tvayā dattena toyena bhaviṣyanti hitāya vai


We have heard that if after bestowing your daughter you offer oblations to celestials and forefathers, they will be propitious to you.


vaiśampāyana uvāca

evaṁ bahuvidhaṁ tasyā niśamya paridevitam

pitā mātā ca sā caova kanyā prarurudustrayaḥ


Vaiśampāyana said: Having heard her these piteous lamentations, father, brother and daughter began to weep together.


tataḥ praruditān sarvān niśamyātha sutastadā

utphullanayano bālaḥ kalamavyaktamabravīt


Thereupon, seeing them all weep, their son of tender years, spoke thus in childish words, his eyes expanded with joy:


mā pitā ruda mā mātarmā svasastviti cābravīt

prahasanniva sarvāṁstānekaikamanusarpati

tataḥ sa tṛṇamādāya prahṛṣṭaḥ punarabravīt

anenāhaṁ haniṣyāmi rākṣasaṁ puruṣādakam


He said: O father! O mother! O sister! Do not weep! Thus saying and smiling, he came to each of them. Then, taking up a blade of grass, he said again in joy: I shall kill cannibal Rākṣasa by this!


tathāpi teṣāṁ duḥkhena parītānāṁ niśamya tat

bālasya vākyamavyaktaṁ harṣaḥ samabhavanmahān


Through they were all in grief, yet hearing lisping words of the child, they felt exceeding delight.
