guṇaiḥ samuditān dṛṣṭvā paurāḥ pāṇḍusutāṁstadā
kathayāṁcakrire teṣāṁ guṇān saṁsatsu bhārata
O descendant of Bharata! Seeing Pāṇḍavas, endued with all accomplishments, citizens began to speak to their acomplishments in every place of the resort.
rājyaprāptiṁ ca samprāptaṁ jyeṣṭhaṁ pāṇḍusutaṁ tadā
kathayanti sma sambhūya catvareṣu sabhāsu ca
Assembling in court yards and in other places of meeting, they talked of the eldest son of Pāṇḍu as a person fit for governing the kingdom.
prajñācakṣuracakṣuṣṭvād dhṛtarāṣṭro janeśvaraḥ
rājyaṁ na prāptavān pūrvaṁ sa kathaṁ nṛpatirbhavet
They said: King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, though possessed of the eye of knowledge, did not obtain the kingdom because he was blind. How can he be a king now?
tathā śaṁtanavo bhīṣmaḥ satyasaṁdho mahāvrataḥ
pratyākhyāya purā rājyaṁ na sa grahīṣyati
Son of Śāntanu, Bhīṣma, is of rigid vows and devoted to truth, having relinquished kingdom before, he will never accept it now.
te vayaṁ pāṇḍavajyeṣṭhaṁ taruṇa vṛddhaśīlinam
abhiṣiñcām sādhvadya satyakāruṇyavedinam
We will therefore with all proper ceremonies, in all the eldest Pāṇḍava Yudhiṣṭhira, endued with youth, accomplished in battle, versed in Vedas and is truthful and kind.
sa hi bhīṣmaṁ śāṅtanavaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ ca dharmavit
saputraṁ vividhairbhogairyojayiṣyati pūjayan
Worshipping son of Śāntanu, Bhīṣma and virtuous Dhṛtarāṣṭra, Yudhiṣṭhira will certainly maintain Bhīṣma and Dhṛtarāṣṭra with his sons.
teṣāṁ duryodhanaḥ śrutvā tāni vākyāni jalpatām
yudhiṣṭhirānuraktānāṁ paryatapyata durmatiḥ
Wicked minded Duryodhana, hearing these words of men attached towards Yudhiṣṭhira, was exceedingly grieved.
sa tapyamāno duṣṭātmā teṣāṁ vāco cakṣame
īrṣyayā cāpi saṁtapto dhṛtarāṣṭramupāgamat
Wicked minded man was much afflicted and he could not bear their words. Being inflamed with jealousy, he went to Dhṛtarāṣṭra.
tatao virahitaṁ dṛṣṭvā pitaraṁ pratipūjya saḥ
paurānurāgasaṁtaptaḥ pañcādidamabhāṣata
Finding him alone, he duly saluted him with reverence and having been distressed by the partiality of citizens towards Yudhiṣṭhira, he spoke thus:
duryodhana uvāca
śrutā me jalpatāṁ tāta paurāṇāmaśivā giraḥ
tvāmanudṛtya bhīṣmaṁ ca patimicchanti pāṇḍavam
Duryodhana said: O father! I have heard the citizens uttering words of ill omen. Passing you and Bhīṣma by, they desire Pāṇḍava to be their king.
matametacca bhīṣmasya na ca rājyaṁ bubhukṣati
asmākaṁ tu parāṁ pīḍāṁ cikīrṣanti pure janāḥ
Bhīṣma will give his consent to this, for he will not desire to rule kingdom. It seems the citizens are desiring to inflinct a great injury on us.
pitṛtaḥ prāptavān rājyaṁ pāṇḍurātmanuṇaiḥ purā
tvamandhaguṇasaṁyogāt prāptaṁ rājyaṁ na labdhavān
Pāṇḍu formerly obtained ancestral kingdom by the virtue of his own accomplishments. Because you are blind, you did not get the kingdom, though you have every accomplishment to obtain it.
sa eṣa pāṇḍordāyādyaṁ yadi prāpnoti pāṇḍavaḥ
tasya putro dhruvaṁ prāptastasya tasyāpi cāparaḥ
If son of Pāṇḍu now obtains kingdom as his inheritance from Pāṇḍu, then his son will obtain it after him. That son ̍ s son and so on, it will thus forever descend on Pāṇḍu ̍ s line.
te vayaṁ rājavaṁśena hīnāḥ saha sutairapi
avajñātā bhaviṣyāmo lokasya jagatīpate
We will then with all our sons be excluded from the royal line. o king! We will be disgraced and hated by all people.
satataṁ nirayaṁ parapiṇḍajīvinaḥ
na bhavema yatā rājaṁstathā nītirvidhīyatām
Becoming dependants on others for our food, we will suffer counsel that is consonant with ststesmaship.
yadi tvaṁ hi purā rājannidaṁ rājyamavāptavān
dhruvaṁ prāpsyāma ca vayaṁ rājyamapyavaśe jane
O king! However people might be unfavourable towards us, if you had obtained kingdom before, we would have certainly succeded to it.
