Śāntanu, Satyavatī, Citrāṅgada, Vicitravīrya

 vaiśampāyana uvāca

tato vivāhe nirvṛtte sa rājā śāntanurnṛpaḥ
tāṁ kanyāṁ rūpasampannāṁ svagṛhe saṁnyaveśayat


Vaiśampāyana said:O king! After conclusion of the marriage, Śāntanu installed that beautiful lady in his household.


tataḥ śāntanavo dhīmān satyavatyāmajāyata
vīraścitrāṅgado nāma vīryavān puruṣeśvaraḥ


Thereupon, wise Śāntanu begot on his wife Satyavatī very powerful hero named Citraṅgada, the best of men.


athāparaṁ maheṣvāsaṁ satyavatyāṁ sutaṁ prabhuḥ
vicitravīryaṁ rājānaṁ janayāmāsa vīryavān


Powerful king begot on Satyavatī another son, named Vicitravīrya, who became a mighty bow man and king after his father.


aprāptavati tasmiṁstu yauvanaṁ puruṣarṣabhe
sa rājā śāntanurdhīdhīmān kāladharmamupeyivān


Before that best of men, Vicitravīrya, had attained majority, his father succumbed to inevitable influence of Time.


svarge śāntanau bhīṣmaścitrāṅgadamariṁdamam
sthāpayāmāsa vai rājye satyavatyā mate sthitaḥ


When Śāntanu went to heaven, Bhīṣma, who was always obedient to Satyavatī, installed Citrāṅgada on the throne.


sa tu citrāṅgadaḥ śauryāt sarvāṁścikṣepa pārthivān
manuṣyaṁ na hi mene sa kaṁcit sadṛśamātmanaḥ


Citrāṅgada also defeated all kings of the world by his prowess. He could not find equal to himself amongst men.


taṁ kṣipantaṁ surāṁścaiva manuṣyānasurāṁstathā
gandharvarājo balavāṁstulyanāmābhyayāt tadā


Seeing him defeta men, Asuras and even celestials, powerful king of Gandharvas, who bore the same name with him, came to fight him.


tenāsya sumahad yuddhaṁ kurukṣetre babhūva ha
tayorbalavatostatra gandharvakurumukhyayoḥ
nadyāstīre sarasvatyāḥ samāstiro ̍ bhavad raṇaḥ
tasmin vimarde tumule śastravarṣasamākule
māyādhiko ̍ vadhīd vīraṁ gandharvaḥ kurusattamam


Between that foremost of Kurus and powerful Gandharva chief, a fearful combat lasted for 3 long years on the banks of Sarasvatī. In that fierce encounter, which was covered with showers of weapons, the best of Kurus was killed, by the Gandharva through his greater prowess or powerful Māyā - illusion.


sa hatvā tu naraśreṣṭhaṁ citrāṅgadamariṁdamam
antāya kṛtvā gandharvo divamācakrame tataḥ


Having killed that best of men, chastiser of foes, Citraṅgada, Gandharva went to heaven.


tasmin puruṣārdūle nihate bhūritejasi
bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavo rājā pretakāryāṇyakārayat


When that best of men, greatly powerful prince was killed, Bhīṣma, son of Śāntanu, performed all his obsequies.


vicitravīryaṁ ca tadā bālamaprāptayauvanam
kururājye mahābāhurabhyaṣiñcadanantaram


Thereupon, he installed mighty armed boy Vicitravīrya, still in his minority, on the throne of the Kuru kingdom.


vicitravīryaḥ sa tadā bhīṣmasya vacane sthitaḥ
anvaśāsanmahārāja pitṛpaitāmahaṁ padam


Vicitravīrya, ever obedient to the son of Śāntanu, Bhīṣma, ruled the kingdom of his father and grand sires.


sa dharmaśāstrakuśalaṁ bhīṣmaṁ śāntanavaṁ nṛpaḥ
pūjayāmāsa dharmeṇa sa cainaṁ pratyapālayat


He adopted son of Śāntanu, Bhīṣma, learned in Śāstras of religion and law. He too protected him very virtuously.
