vaiśampāyana uvāca
tataḥ putraśataṁ jajñe gāndhāryāṁ janamejaya
dhṛtarāṣṭrasya vaiśayāyāmekaścāpi śatāt paraḥ
Vaiśampāyana said: O Janamejaya! 100 sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra were born in the womb of Gāndhārī. Besides these 100 sons, 1 more was born by a Vaiśya wife.
pāṇḍoḥ kuntyāṁ ca mādryāṁ ca putrāḥ pañca mahārathāḥ
devebhyaḥ samapadyanta saṁtānāya kulasya vai
Pāṇḍu had by his wives Kuntī and Mādrī 5 sons, all great car warriors, who were all begotten by celestials for the perpetuation of Kuru dynasty.
janamejaya uvāca
kathaṁ putraśataṁ jajñe gāndhāryāṁ dvijasattama
kiyatā caiva kālena teṣāmāyuśca kiṁ param
Janamejaya said: O best of twice born! Why did Gāndhārī gave birth to 100 sons? In how many years they were born? What was their period of life?
kathaṁ caikaḥ sa vaiśyāyāṁ dhṛtarāṣṭrasuto ̍ bhavat
kathaṁ ca sadṛśīṁ bhāryāṁ gāndhārīṁ dharmacāriṇīm
ānukūlye vartamānaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭro ̍ bhyavartata
How did Dhṛtarāṣṭra begot a son on a Vaiṣya wife? How did Dhṛtarāṣṭra behave towards his loving, obedient and virtuous wife, Gāndhārī?
kathaṁ ca śaptasya sataḥ pāṇḍostena mahātmanā
samutpannā daivatebhyaḥ putrāḥ pañca mahārathāḥ
etad vidvan yathānyāyaṁ vistareṇa tapodhana
How were born 5 sons of Pāṇḍu, those great car warriors, through cursed by the high souled man - Ṛṣi in the form of the deer?
kathayasya na me tṛptiḥ kathyamāneṣu bandhuṣu
O ascetic! Tell me all this in detail. I am not satiated with hearing the accounts of my friends and relatives.
vaiśampāyana uvāca
kṣucchramābhipariglānaṁ dvaipāyanamupasthitam
toṣayāmasa gāndhārī vyāsastasyai varaṁ dadau
Vaiśampāyana said: One day Gāndhārī gratified Dvaipāyana Vyāsa, who came hungry and fatiqued. Vyāsa granted her a boon.
sā vabre sadṛśaṁ bhartuḥ putrāṇāṁ śatamātmanaḥ
tataḥ kālena sā garbhaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭrādavāgrahīt
Namely that she should have 100 sons like her husband. Some time after she conceived by Dhṛtarāṣṭra.
saṁvatsaradvayaṁ taṁ tu gāndhārī garbhamāhitam
aprajā dhārayāmāsa tatastāṁ duḥkhamāviśat
She bore burden in her womb for 2 years without being delivered. She was therefore much afflicted with grief.
śrutvā kuntīsutaṁ jātaṁ bālārkasamatejasam
udarasyātmanaḥ sthairyamupalabhyānvacintayam
ajñātaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭrasya yatnetā mahatā tataḥ
sodaraṁ ghātayāmāsa gāndhārī duḥkhamūrcchitā
tato jajñe māṁsapeśī lohāṣṭhīleva saṁhatā
She heard that a son was born to Kuntī, as effulgent as the morning sun. Being sorry that in her case time of bearing the child in the womb was too long and being deprived of reason in grief, she struck her womb with violence without the knowledge of Dhṛtarāṣṭra. Thereupon was brought forth a hard mass of flesh like an iron ball.
dvivarṣasambhṛtā kukṣau tāmutsraṣṭuṁ pracakrame
atha dvaipāyano jñātvā tvaritaḥ samupāgamat
She bore in her womb it for 2 years. Seeing hard mass of flesh, she decided to throw it, but Dvaipāyana, knowing it, soon came to her.
tāṁ sa māṁsamayīṁ peśīṁ dadarśa japatāṁ varaḥ
tato ̍ bravīt saubaleyīṁ kimidaṁ te cikīrṣitam
sā cātmano mataṁ satyaṁ śaśaṁsa paramarṣaye
The best of ascetics, Vyāsa, saw that mass of flesh and asked daughter of Subala: What have you done?
Gāndhārī told her real feeling to great Ṛṣi.
gāndhāryuvāca
jyeṣṭhaṁ kuntīsutaṁ jātaṁ śrutvā ravisamaprabham
duḥkhena parameṇodamudaraṁ ghātitaṁ mayā
śataṁ ca kila putrāṇāṁ vitīrṇaṁ me tvayā putrā
Gāndhārī said: Having heard that Kuntīhad first given birth to a son, as effulgent as sun, I struck at my womb in grief. You granted me a boon that I should get 100 sons, but a ball of flesh has come out in the place of 100 sons.
vyāsa uvāca
O daughter of Subala! It is even so! My words can never be futile.
vitathaṁ noktapūrvaṁ me svaireṣvapi kuto ̍ nyathā
ghṛtapūrṇaṁ kuṇḍaśataṁ kṣiprameva vidhīyatām
sugupteṣu ca deśeṣu rathā caiva vidhīyatām
śītābhiradbhiraṣṭhi-lāmimāṁ ca pariṣecaya
I have not spoken an untruth even in jest, why then will my words be futile! Let 100 jars, filled with ghee be brought in the proper way. Let them be placed at a concealed place and let cool water be sprinkled on this ball of flesh.
vaiśampāyana uvāca
sā sicyamānā tvaṣṭhīlā babhūva śatadhā tadā
aṅguṣṭhaparvamātrāṇāṁ garbhaṇāṁ pṛthageva tu
Vaiśampāyana said: ball of flesh, being thus sprinkled with water, became divided into 100 parts. They separately became 100 parts, each about the size of a thumb.
ekādhikaśataṁ pūrṇaṁ yathāyogaṁ viśāmpate
saṁsapeśyāstadā rājan kramaśaḥ kālaparyayāt
O king! That ball of flesh in time became gradually 100 and one separate parts.
tatastāṁsteṣu kuṇḍeṣu garbhānavadadhe tadā
svānugupteṣu deṣeṣu rathāṁ vai vyadadhāt tataḥ
These were then placed into the jars, filled with ghee and they were placed at a concealed spot and were carefully watched.
śaśaṁsa caiva bhāgavān kālenaitāvatā punaḥ
udghāṭanīyānyetāni kuṇḍānīti ca saubalīm
Illustrious Vyāsa then said to daughter of Subala that she should open covers of jars after full 2 years.
ityuktvā bhagavām vyāsastathā pratinidhāya ca
jagāma tapase dhīmān himavantaṁ śiloccayam
Having said this and having made these arrangements, illustrious and wise Vyāsa went to Himalaya mountains to perform his penances.
jajñe krameṇa caitena teṣāṁ duryodhano nṛpaḥ
janmatastu pramāṇena jyeśṭho rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
King Duryodhana was then in time born from them - parts of the fleshy ball.
According to the order of birth, Yudhiṣṭhira was the eldest.
tadākhyātaṁ tu bhīṣmāya vidurāya ca dhīmate
yasminnahani durdharṣo jajñe duryodhanastadā
tasminneva mahābāhurjajñe bhīmo ̍ pi vīryavān
sa jātamātra evātha dhṛtarāṣṭrasuto nṛpa
rāsabhārāvasadṛśaṁ rurāva ca nanāda ca
taṁ kharāḥ pratyabhāṣanta gṛdhragomāyuvāyasāḥ
News of Duryodhana ' s birth was carried by Bhīṣma and wise Vidura. On the day when haughty Duryodhana was born, on that very day was born mighty armed and greatly powerful Bhīma. O king! As soon as Duryodhana was born, he roared and brayed like an ass. Hearing that sound, arsons vultures, jackals and crows spontaneously cried.
vātāśca pravavuścāpi digdāhaścābhavat tadā
tatastu bhītavad rājā dhṛtarāṣṭro ̍ vravīdidam
samānīya bahūn viprān bhīṣmaṁ vidurameva ca
anyāṁśca suhṛdo rājan kurūn sarvāṁstathaiva ca
Strong wind began to blow and fires regard in every direction. Thereupon, frightened king Dhṛtarāṣṭra summoning many Brāhmaṇas, Bhīṣma, Vidura and other friends, relatives and Kurus, said:
yudhiṣṭhiro rājaputro jyeṣṭho naḥ kulavardhanaḥ
prāptaḥ svaguṇto rājyaṁ na vācyamasmi naḥ
The eldest of princes, Yudhiṣṭhira, is perpetuator of your race. He has acquired kingdom by virtue of his birth. We have nothing to say to this.
ayaṁ tvanantarastasmādapi rājā bhaviṣyati
etad vibrūta me tathyaṁ yadatra bhavitā dhruvam
But will my son be able to become king after him? Tell me what is right and lawful.
vākyasyaitasya nidhane dikṣu sarvasu bhārata
kravyādāḥ prāṇadān ghorāḥ śivāścāśivaśasinaḥ
O descendant of Bharata race! Jackals and other carnivorous animals began to howl omniously from all sides.
lakṣayitvā nimittāni tāni ghorāṇi sarvaśaḥ
te ̍ bruvan brāhmaṇā rājan viduraśca mahāmatiḥ
yathemāni nimittāni ghorāṇi manujādhipa
utthitāni sute jāte jyeṣṭhe te puruṣarṣabha
vyaktaṁ kulāntakaraṇo bhavitaiṣa sutastava
tasya śāntiḥ parityāge guptāvapanayo mahān
O king! Seeing these frightful ominous signs, assembled Brāhmaṇas and high minded Vidura said: O king! O best of men! When these fearful omnious signs are seen at the birth of your eldest son, prosperity of the race depends on abandoning him. There must be great calamity in keeping him.
śatamekonamapyastu putrāṇāṁ te mahīpate
tyajainamekaṁ śāntiṁ cet kulasyecchasi bhārata
O king! If you abandon him, there still remain 99 sons of you. O descendant of Bharata race! If you desire good for your dynasty, abandon him!
ekena kuru vai kṣemaṁ kulasya jagatastathā
tyajedekaṁ kulasyārthe grāmasyārthe kulaṁ tyajet
grāmaṁ janapadasyārthe ātmārthe pṛthivīṁ tyajet
sa tathā vidureṇoktastaiśca sarvaidvijottamaiḥ
na cakāra tathā rājā putrasnehasamanvitaḥ
tataḥ putraśataṁ pūrṇaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭrasya pārthiva
Do good to the world and to your own race by abandoning him. It is said that individual should be abandoned for the sake of family, a family should be abandoned for the sake of a village. A village should be abandoned for the sake of a country and the world should be abandoned for the sake of the soul. Having been thus addressed by Vidura and Brāhmaṇas, king, out of affection for the son, did not act accordingly.
māsamātreṇa saṁjajñe kanyā caikā śatādhikā
gāndhāryāṁ kliśyamānāyāmudareṇa vivardhatā
dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ mahārājāṁ vaiśyā paryacarat kila
tasmin saṁvatsare rājan dhṛtarāṣṭranmahāyaśāḥ
jajñe dhīmāṁstatastasyāṁ yuyutsuḥ karaṇo nṛpa
evaṁ putraśataṁ jajñe dhṛtarāṣṭrasya dhīmataḥ
mahārathānāṁ vīrāṇāṁ kanyā caikā śatādhikā
yuyutsuśca mahātejā vaiśyāputraḥ pratāpavān
O king! There were born within a month 100 sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra and also a daughter abowe and over that 100. When Gāndhārí was affected with her advanced pregnancy, a Vaiśya maid servant was engaged in attending Dhṛtarāṣṭra. O king! During that year illustrious and greatly intelligent son was begotter on her, who was afterwards named Yuyutsu, also known as Karaṇa. Thus were begotten 100 sons, by wise Dhṛtarāṣṭra, who were all heroes and thus also was born greatly powerful Yuyutsu on Vaiśya woman.
