vaiśampāyana uvāca
tatra teṣu śayāneṣu hiḍimbo nāma rākṣasaḥ
avidūre vanāt tasmācchālavṛkṣaṁ samāśritaḥ
Vaiśampāyana said: Not far from the place where Pāṇḍavas slept, there was a Rākṣasa named Hiḍimba, living on a Śāla tree.
krūro mānuṣamāṁsādo mahāvīryaparākramaḥ
prāvṛḍjaladharaśyāmaḥ piṅgākṣo dāruṇākṛtiḥ
daṁṣṭrākarālavadanaḥ piśitepsuḥ kṣudhārditaḥ
lambasphiglambajaddaro raktaśmaśruśiroruhaḥ
mahāvrākṣagalaskandhaḥ śarūkarṇo bibhīṣaṇaḥ
yadṛcchayā tānapaśyat pāṇḍuputrān mahārathān
He was greatly energetic and powerful, black as clouds in rainy season, hungry and eager for human flesh of cruel and terrible visage, of long shanks and large belly, locks and beard, red in colour of choulder broad as the neck of the large tree of ears like arrows and of features frightful and hideous. When casting his glance at pleasure all around the place, he saw great car warriors, Pāṇḍavas.
virūparūpaḥ piṅgākṣaḥ karālo ghoradarśanaḥ
piśitepsuḥ kṣudhārtaśca tānapaśyad yadṛcchayā
Ugly featured, red eyed, fearful and terrible looking, hungry and thirsty. He looked around at plasure and he saw them in that state.
ūrdhvāṅguliḥ sa kaṇḍūyan dhunvan rūkṣān śiroruhān
jṛmbhamāṇo mahāvaktraḥ punaḥ punaravekṣya ca
hṛṣṭo mānuṣamāṁsasya mahākāyo mahābalaḥ
āghrāya mānuṣaṁ gandhaṁ bhaginīmidamabravīt
upapannaścirasyādya bhakṣo ̍ yaṁ mama supriyaḥ
snehasravān prasravati jihvā paryeti me sukham
Yawning wistfully, shaking his dry and grizzly locks pointed upwards and scratching them with his finger large mouthed cannibal repeatedly looked at sleeping sons of Pāṇḍu. Of huge body and great strength of complexion like a mass of clouds, of teeth long and sharp pointed, of face emitting a sort of lustre. He was ever pleased with human food. Smelling scent of man, he sopke thus to his sister: It is after a long time that my most favourite food has come to me. My tongue is moist with saliva in anticipating to relish such a food.
aṣṭau daṁṣṭrāḥ sutīkṣṇāgrāścirasyāpātadussahāḥ
deheṣu majjayiṣyāmi snigdheṣu piśiteṣu ca
My 8 teeth are sharp and pointed and incapable of being resisted by anything. I shall dip them into most delicious meat.
ākramya mānuṣaṁ kaṇddamācchidya dhamanīmapi
uṣṇaṁ navaṁ prapāsyāmi phenilaṁ rudhiraṁ bahu
Attacking human throat and arteries, I shall drink a plentiful quantity of hot, fresh and frothy blood.
gaccha jānīhi ke tvete śerate vanamāśritāḥ
mānuṣo balavān gandho ghrāṇaṁ tarpayatīva me
Go and ascertain who these men are, lying asleep in this forest. Strong scent of man pleases my nostrils.
hatvaitān mānuṣān sarvānānayasva mamāntikam
asmadviṣayasuptebhyo naitebhyo bhayamasti te
Killing all these men, bring them to me. They are asleep in my dominion. There is no fear for you.
eṣāmutkṛtya māṁsāni mānuṣāṇāṁ yatheṣṭataḥ
bhakṣayiṣyāva sahitau kuru tūrṇaṁ vaco mama
Tearing a plentiful flesh from these men. We will then both eat the meat. You immediately obey my command.
bhakṣayitvā ca māṁsāni mānuṣāṇāṁ prakāmataḥ
nṛtyāva sahitāvāyāṁ dattatālāvanekaśaḥ
Eating to our will the flesh of these men, we will dance together in various tones.
evamuktā hiḍimbā tu hiḍimbena tadā vane
bhrāturvacanamājñāya tvaramāṇeva rākṣasī
jagāma tatra yatra sma pāṇḍavā bharatarṣabha
dadarśa tatra sā gatvā pāṇḍavān pṛthayā saha
śayānān bhīmasenaṁ ca jāgrataṁ tvaparājitam
Having been thus addressed by Hiḍimba in the forest, Hiḍimbā, female Rākṣasa, went at the command of her brother, O best of Bharata race, to the place where Pāṇḍavas were. Going there she saw Pāṇḍavas with Pṛthā asleep and invincible Bhīmasena sitting awake.
dṛṣṭaiva bhīmasenaṁ sā śālapotamivodgatam
rākṣasī kāmayāmāsa rūpeṇāpratimaṁ bhuvi
Seeing Bhīmasena, who resembled Śāla tree and who was matchless in beauty, Rākṣasī was filled with desire.
ayaṁ śyāmo mahābāhuḥ siṁhaskandho mahādyutiḥ
kambugrīvaḥ puṣkarākṣo bhartā yukto bhavenmama
She thought: He is of the colour of heated gold, he is mighty armed, he has leonine shoulders, he is greatly effulgent, he is conch necked and he is lotus eyed. He is fit to be my husband.
nāhaṁ bhrātṛvaco jātu kuryāṁ krūropasaṁhitam
patisneho ̍ tibalavān na tathā bhrātṛsauhṛdam
muhūrtameva tṛptiśca bhaved bhrāturmamaiva ca
hatairetairahatvā tu modiṣye śāśvatīḥ samāḥ
I shall not carry on cruel commands of my brother. Woman ̍ s love for her husband is greater than that of her brother. If I kill him, my brother ̍ s and my pleasure will be momentary, but if I do not kill him, I shall forever enjoy with him.
sā kāmarūpiṇī rūpaṁ kṛtvā mānuṣamuttamam
upatasthe mahābāhuṁ bhīmasenaṁ śanaiḥ śanaiḥ
lajjamāneva lalanā divyābharaṇabhūṣitā
smitapūrvamidaṁ vākyaṁ bhīmasenamathābravīt
kutastvamasi samprāptaḥ kaścāsi puruṣarṣabha
ka ime śerate ceha puruṣā devarūpiṇaḥ
She was capable of assuming any from at will. She assumed an excellent human form and came slowly to the mighty armed Bhīmasena. Being decked with celestial ornaments, she came to Bhīmasena in bashful demenour and with smiles on her lips. She said: O best of men! Whence have you come here and who are you? Who are these celestial like men sleeping here?
keyaṁ vai bṛhatī śyāmā sukumārī tavānagha
śete vanamidaṁ prāpya viśvastā svagṛhe yathā
O sinless one! Who is this delicate lady of transcendental beauty sleeping so trustfully here in this forest, as if she is in her own house.
nedaṁ jānāti gahanaṁ vanaṁ rākṣasasevitam
vasati hyatra pāpātmā hiḍimbo rākṣasaḥ
Do you not know that this dense forest is abode of Rākṣasas. Here dwells wicked minded Rākṣasas named Hiḍimba.
tenāhaṁ preṣitā bhrātrā duṣṭabhāvena rakṣasā
bibhakṣayiṣatā māsaṁ yuṣmākamamaropama
O celestial like man! I have been sent here by my brother, that Rākṣasas, with cruel intention of eating your flesh.
sāhaṁ tvāmabhisamprekṣya devagarbhasamaprabham
nānyaṁ bhartāramicchāmi satyametad bravīmi te
I tell you truly that seeing you as effulgent as celestial, I do not desire anybody else to be my husband except you.
etad vijñāya dharmajña yuktaṁ mayi samācara
kāmopahatacittāṅgīṁ bhajamānāṁ bhajasva mām
O learned man in all the precepts of virtue! Do to me what is proper! My heart and body are both pierced by Kāma - god of love. I am desirous of making you mine, make me yours!
trāsyāmi tvāṁ mahābāho rākṣasāt puruṣādakāt
vatsyāvo giridurgeṣu bhartā bhava mamānagha
O mighty armed hero! I shall rescue you from Rākṣasas who eats human flesh! O sinless one! Become my husband! We will live on the breasts of mountains.
antarikṣacarī hyasmi kāmato vicarāmi ca
atulāmāpnuhi prītiṁ tatra tatra mayā saha
I can travel in the sky and I do so at pleasure. You may enjoy with me incomparable pleasure in those places.
bhīmasena uvāca
mātaraṁ bhrātaraṁ jyeṣṭhaṁ sukhasuptān kathaṁ tvimān
parityajeta ko nvadya prabhavanniha rākṣasi
Bhīma said: O Rākṣasī! Like a self controlled Ṛṣi, who can leave his mother, elder and younger brothers, sleeping happily here?
ko hi suptānimān bhrātṝn dattvā rākṣasabhojanam
mātaraṁ ca naro gacchet kāmārta iva madvidhaḥ
What man like me would leave his sleeping mother and brother and as food for a Rākṣasas in order gratify his lust?
rākṣasyuvāca
yat te tat kariṣye sarvānetān prabodhaya
mokṣayiṣyāmyahaṁ kāmaṁ rākṣasāt puruṣādakāt
Rākṣasi said: Awake them all! I shall do what is agreeable to you. I shall rescue you all from my canibal brother.
bhīmasena uvāca
sukhasuptān vane bhrātṝn mātaraṁ caiva rākṣasi
na bhayād bodhayiṣyāmi bhrātustava durātmanaḥ
Bhīma said: O Rākṣasī! For the fear of your wicked minded brother, shall not awaken my mother and brothers, sleeping comfortably in the forest.
na hi me rākṣasā bhīru soḍhuṁ śaktāḥ parākramam
na manuṣyā na gandharvā na yakṣāścārulocane
O timid girl! Rākṣasas are never able to withstand my prowess. O beautiful eyed one! No man, no Gandharava and no Yakṣa can also withstand it.
gaccha vā tiṣṭha vā bhadre yad vāpīcchasi tat kuru
taṁ vā preṣaya tanvaṅgi bhrātaraṁ puruṣādakam
O amiable girl, go or stray or do what you like, or O delicate shaped lady! Send your cannibal brother to me!
vaiśampāyana uvāca
tāṁ viditvā ciragatāṁ hiḍimbo rākṣaseśvaraḥ
avatīrya drumāt tasmādājagāmāṣu pāṇḍvān
Vaiśampāyana said: Seeing her delay in returning, king of Rākṣasas, Hiḍimba, got down from the tree an came where Pāṇḍavas were.
lohitākṣo mahābāhurūrdhvakeśo mahānanaḥ
meghasaṁghātavarṣmā ca tīkṣṇadaṁṣṭro bhayanakaḥ
He was of red eyed and strong arms of standing hair and large mouth, of colour like louds, of sharp teeth and fearful appearance.
tamāpatantaṁ dṛṣṭaiva tathā vikṛtadarśanam
hiḍimbovāca vitrastā bhīmasenamidaṁ vacaḥ
Seeing this frightful creature alike from the tree, Hiḍimbā became alarmed and spoke thus to Bhīmasena:
āpatatyaeṣa duṣṭātmā saṁkruddhaḥ puruṣādakaḥ
sāhaṁ tvāṁ bhrātṛbhiḥ sārdhaṁ yad bravīmi tathā kuru
Wicked minded cannabal is coming in anger. Do with your brothers what I ask to you.
ahaṁ kāmagamā vīra rakṣobalasamanvitā
āruhemāṁ mama śroṇiṁ neṣyāmi tvāṁ vihāyasā
O hero! Endued as I am with the prowess of Rākṣasas, I am capable of going anywhere at will. Get upon my hips, I shall carry you through the sky.
prabodhayaitān saṁsuptān mātaraṁ ca paraṁtapa
sarvāneva gamiṣyāmi gṛhītvā vo vihāyasā
O chastiser of foes, awake your mother and others, sleeping in comfort. taking them all, I shall go through the sky.
bhīma uvāca
mā bhaistvaṁ pṛthusuśroṇi naiṣa kaścinmayi sthite
ahamenaṁ haniṣyāmi prekṣantyāste sumadhyame
Bhīma said: O lady of fair hips! Fear nothing! I am certain that so long I am here, there is no Rākṣasa who can harm any of these men. O lady of slender waist! I shall kill this cannibal before your very sight.
nāyaṁ pratibalo bhīru rākṣasāpasado mama
soḍhuṁ yudhi parispandamathavā sarvarākṣasāḥ
O timid girl! This worst of Rākṣasas is not a worthy antagonist of mine, nay all Rākṣasas can never with stand my great prowess in battle.
paśya bāhū suvṛttau me hastihastanibhāvimau
ūrū parighasaṁkāśau saṁhataṁ cāpyuro mahat
Behold my arms are each like a trunk of elephant, my thighs are like two iron clubs, my chest is broad and adamantine.
vikramaṁ me yathendrasya sādya drakṣyasi śobhane
māvamaṁsthāḥ pṛthuśroṇi matvā māmiha mānuṣam
O beautiful girl! You shall see today my Indra like prowess! O lady of fair hips! Do not consider me weak, thinking that I am a human being!
hiḍimbovāca
nāvamanye naravyāghra tvāmahaṁ devarūpiṇam
dṛṣṭaprabhāvastu mayā mānuṣeṣveva rākṣasaḥ
Hiḍimbā said: O best of men! You are like celestial! I do not consider you weak, but I have seen that prowess of that Rākṣasas extend those of men.
vaiśampāyana uvāca
tathā saṁjalpatastasya bhīmasenasya bhārata
vācaḥ śuśrāva tāḥ kruddho rākṣasaḥ puruṣādakaḥ
Vaiśampāyana said: O descendant of Bhārata! Angry cannibal Rākṣasa heard these words of Bhīma thus talking there.
avekṣamāṇastasyāśca hiḍimbo mānuṣaṁ vapuḥ
snagdāmapūritaśikhaṁ samagrendunibhānanam
subhrūnāsākṣikeśāntaṁ sukumāranakhatvacam
sarvābharaṇasaṁyuktaṁ susūkṣmāmbaravāsasam
He saw Hiḍimbā in human form, her head decked with garlands of flowers and her face like full moon. Her eyebrows, nose, eyes and ringlets were all of handsome description and her nails and complexion were of most delicate colour. She was decked with all kinds of ornaments and attired in fine transparent robes.
tāṁ tathā mānuṣaṁ rūpaṁ bibhratīṁ sumanoharam
puṁskāmāṁ śarūmānasca cukrodha puruṣādakaḥ
Seeing her in that charming human form, cannibal thought that she was lustful and became very angry.
saṁkruddho rākṣasastasyā bhaginyāḥ kurusattam
utphālya vipule netre tatastāmidamabravīt
ko hi me bhoktukāmasya vighnaṁ carita durmatiḥ
na bibheṣi hiḍimbe kiṁ matkopād vipramohitā
O best of Kurus! Becoming angry with his sister, Rākṣasa expanded his large eyes and spoke thus to her: What foolish creature throws an obstacle on my way when I am hungry? O hiḍimbā! Have you become so senseless as not to fear my anger?
dhik tvāmasati puṁskāme mama vipriyakāriṇi
pūrveṣāṁ rākṣasendrāṇāṁ sarveṣāmayaśaskari
O unchaste woman! Fie on you! You do an injury to me out of lust! You are ready to sacrifice honours of all chief Rākṣasas, your ancestors!
yānimānāśritākārṣīrvipriyaṁ sumahanmama
eṣa tānadya vai sarvān haniṣyāmi tvayā saha
I shall kill you with all those for whose sake you are trying to do me a great injury.
ebamuktvā hiḍimbāṁ sa hiḍimbo lohitekṣaṇaḥ
vadhāyābhipapātainān dantairdantānupaspṛśan
Having addressed Hiḍimbā thus, Hiḍimba with red eyes, his teeth pressing against teeth, ran at her with intention of killing her.
tamāpatantaṁ samprekṣya bhīmaḥ praharatāṁ varaḥ
bhartsayāmāsa tejasvī tiṣṭha tiṣṭheti cābravīt
The best of all wielders of weapons, Bhīma, seeing him rush at her, reproched him by saying: Stop! Stop!
vaiśampāyana uvāca
bhīmasenastu taṁ dṛṣṭvā rākṣasaṁ prahasanniva
bhaginīṁ prati saṁkruddhamidaṁ vacanamabravīt
kiṁ te hiḍimba etairvā sukhasuptaiḥ prbodhitaiḥ
māmāsādaya durbuddhe tarasā tvaṁ narāśana
Vaiśampāyana said: Seeing Rākṣasa angry with his sister, Bhīmasena smiled in scorn and spoke thus: O Hiḍimba! Why do you awaken these men sleeping in comfort? O wicked minded Rākṣasa! Come to me first without loss of time!
mayyeva praharehi tvaṁ na striyaṁ hantumarhasi
viśeṣato ̍ napakṛte pareṇāpakṛte sati
Smite me first! You should not kill woman, specially when she has been against instead of sinning.
na hīyaṁ svavaśā bālā kāmayatyadya māmiha
coditaiṣā hyanaṅgena śarīrāntaracāriṇā
This girl is not in her own control in becoming lustful towards me. She has been moved by god of love who pervades every living form.
bhaginī tava durvṛtta rakṣasāṁ vai yaśohara
tvanniyogena caiveyaṁ rūpaṁ mama samīkṣya ca
kāmayatayadya māṁ bhīrustava naiṣāparādhyati
anaṅgena kṛte doṣe nemāṁ garhitumarhasi
O wicked creature! O you most infamous of your class! Your sister came here at your command. Seeing me, she desired me. Timid girl has done you no harm. It is the fault of god of love and therefore you should not injure her.
mayi tiṣṭhati duṣṭātman na striyaṁ hantumarhasi
saṁgacchasva mayā sārdhamekenaiko narāṣana
O wicked wretch! You should not kill woman when I am here. O cannibal! Come with me to a distance and fight singly with me.
ahameko nayiṣyāmi tvāmadya yamasādanam
adya madvalaniṣpiṣṭaṁ śiro rākṣasa dīryatām
kuñjarasyeva pādena viniṣpiṣṭaṁ balīyasaḥ
I shall singly fight with you and send you today to the land of dead. O Rākṣasa! Your head will be pounded in pieces, being pressed by my strength.
adya gātrāṇi te kaṅkāḥ śyenā gomāyavastathā
karṣantu bhuvi saṁhṛṣṭā nihatasya mayā mṛdhe
As if pressed by the trend of mighty elephant. When you will be killed by me in battle your body will be today torn by hawks, herons and jackals, in glee.
kṣaṇenādya kariṣye ̍ hamidaṁ vanamarākṣasam
purā yad dūṣitaṁ nityaṁ tvayā bhakṣayatā narān
I shall in a moment make this forest free from all Rākṣasas, so long polluted by you by eating men.
adya tvāṁ bhaginī rakṣaḥ kṛṣyamāṇaṁ mayāsakṛt
drakṣyatyadripratīkāśaṁ siṁheneva mahādvipam
O Rākṣasa! Your sister will see today that I shall drag you, huge though you are like a mountain, as a lion drags elephant.
nirābādhāstvayi hate mayā rākṣasapāṁsana
vanametaccariṣyanti puruṣā vanacāriṇaḥ
O worst of Rākṣasas! When you will be killed by me, men frequenting this forest will live safely and without fear.
hiḍimba uvāca
garjitena vṛthā kiṁ te katthitena ca mānuṣa
kṛtvaitat karmaṇā sarvaṁ katthethā mā ciraṁ kṛthāḥ
Hiḍimba said: O man! What is the need of your this vaunting and boasting? Accomplish all this first and then you may vaunt. Therefore, do not make any day.
balinaṁ manyase yaccāpyātmānaṁ saparākramam
jñāsyasyadya samāgamya mayā ātmānaṁ balādhikam
na tāvadetān hiṁsiṣye svapantvete yathāsukham
eṣa tvāmeva durbuddhe nihanmyadyāpriyaṁvadam
pītvā tavāsṛg gātrebhyastataḥ paścādimānapi
haniṣyāmi tataḥ paścādimāṁ vipriyakāriṇīm
You know yourself to be strong and endued with prowess. In your encounter with me today. You shall now rightly know with what is your real strength. I shall not kill these your brothers till then. Let them sleep at their pleasure! O foolish man! I shall first kill you who speaks such evil words. After drinking your blood, I shall then kill these your brothers and then kill this my sister, who has done me an injury.
vaiśampāyana uvāca
evamuktvā tato bāhuṁ pragṛhya puruṣadakaḥ
abhyadravata saṁkruddho bhīmasenamariṁdamam
Vaiśampāyana said: Having said this, cannibal, outstretching his arms, ran in gret wrath towards that chastiser of foes, Bhīmasena.
tasyābhidravatastūrṇaṁ bhīmo bhīmaparākramaḥ
vegena prahitaṁ bāhuṁ nijagrāha hasanniva
Greatly powerful Bhīma soon seized extended arms of rushing Rākṣasa with great force, as if in sport.
nigṛhya taṁ balād bhīmo visphurantaṁ cakarṣa ha
tasmād deśād dhanūṁṣyaṣṭau siṁhaḥ kṣudramṛgaṁ yathā
Then seizing struggling Rākṣasa with violence, Bhīma dragged him away from that place full 32 cubits, as a lion drags small deer.
tataḥ sa rākṣasaḥ kruddhaḥ pāṇḍavena balārditaḥ
bhīmesanaṁ samāliṅgya vyanadad bhairavaṁ ravam
Thereupon Rākṣasa, becoming angry, clasped Pāṇḍava Bhīma with great force and he sent forth a terrible yell.
punarbhīmo balādenaṁ vicakarṣa mahābalaḥ
mā śabdaḥ sukhasuptānāṁ bhrātṛṇāṁ me bhavediti
Greatly strong Bhīma then dragged him again further away with great force, so that his comfortably sleeping brothers might not awake by his yell.
anyonyaṁ tau samāsādya vicakarṣaturojasā
hiḍimbo bhīmasenaśca vikratuṁ cakratuḥ param
Clasping and dragging each other with great force, Bhīmasena and Hiḍimbā displayed their great prowess.
babhañjatustadā vṛkṣām̐llatāścākarṣatustadā
mattāviva ca saṁrabdhau vāraṇau ṣaṣṭihāyanau
Fighting like two large elephants, mad with rage. They broke down trees and tore off creepers that grew around.
tayoḥ śabdena mahatā vibuddhāste nararṣabhāḥ
saha prātrā ca dadṛśurhiḍimbāmagrataḥ sthitām
By great noise of fighting, those best of men Pāṇḍavas woke up with their mother and they saw Hiḍimbā sitting before them.
vaiśampāyana uvāca
prabuddhāste hiḍimbāyā rūpaṁ dṛṣṭvātimānuṣam
vismitāḥ puruṣavyāghrā babhūvuḥ pṛthayā saha
Vaiśampāyana said: Rising from sleep, those best of men, Pāṇḍavas, with their mother were filled with astonishment on seeing extraordinary beauty of Hiḍimbā.
tataḥ kuntī samīkṣyaināṁ vismitā rūpasampadā
uvāca madhuraṁ vākyaṁ sāntvapūrvamidaṁ śanaiḥ
kasya tvaṁ suragarbhābhe kā vāsi varavarṇini
kena kāryeṇa samprāptā kutaścāgamanaṁ tava
Thereupon, being astonished with her beauty, Kuntī slowly addressed in sweet words and gave her assurance: O celestial beautiful maiden! O beautiful one! Who and whose are you? For what purpose have you came here and from which place have you came?
yadi vāsya vanasya tvaṁ devatā yadi vāpsarāḥ
ācakṣva mama tat sarvaṁ kimarthaṁ ceha tiṣṭhasi
Are you the deity of this forest or you are an Apsara? Tell me all why you are sitting here?
hiḍimbovāca
yadetat paśyasi vanaṁ nīlameghanibhaṁ mahat
nivāso rākṣasyaiṣa hiḍimbasya mamaiva ca
Hiḍimbā said: Blue cloud like great forest that you see, is abode of mine and that of my brother, Rākṣasa Hiḍimba.
tasya māṁ rākṣasendrasya bhaginīṁ viddhi bhāvinī
bhrātrā sampreṣitāmārye tvāṁ saputrāṁ jighāṁsatā
O amiable lady! Know me as being sister of Rākṣasa chief. O respected madam! I was sent by my brother to kill you with your sons.
krūrabuddherahaṁ tasya vacanādāgatā tviha
adrākṣaṁ navahemābhaṁ tava putraṁ mahābalam
Coming here at the command of that cruel minded Rākṣasa, I saw your greatly powerful son of the colour of pure gold.
tato ̍ haṁ sarvabhūtānāṁ bhāve vicaratā śubhe
coditā tava putrasya manmathena vaśānugā
O blessed lady! I was brought under the control of your son by the god of love who pervades the nature of everything.
tato vṛto mayā bhartā tava putro mahābalaḥ
apanetuṁ ca yatito na caiva śakito mayā

cirāyamāṇāṁ māṁ jñātvā tataḥ sa puruṣādakaḥ
svayamevāgato hantumimān sarvāṁstavātmajān

sa tena mama kāntena tava putreṇa dhīmatā
balādito viniṣpiṣya vyapanīto mahātmanā

vikarṣantau mahāvegau garjamānau parasparam
paśyaivaṁ yuddhi vikrāntāvetau ca nararākṣasau
Behold man and Rākṣasa, endued with great strength and prowess, now engaged in combat, pressing each other with great force and filling whole region with their roars.
vaiśampāyana uvāca
tasyāḥ śrutvaiva vacanamutpapāta yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
arjuno nakulaścaiva sahadevaśca vīryavān
Vaiśampāyana said: Hearing her these words, Yudhiṣṭhira, Arjuna, Nakula, powerful Sahadeva, hastily rose up.
tau te dadṛśurāsaktau vikarṣantau parasparam
kāḍakṣamāṇau jayaṁ caiva siṁhāviva balotkaṭau
They saw those two, Bhīma and Hiḍimba, already engaged in fighting. They were dragging each other, both eager to overcome each other like two greatly strong lions.
athānyonyaṁ samāśliṣya vikarṣantau punaḥ punaḥ
dāvāgnidhūmasadṛśaṁ cakratuḥ pārthivaṁ rajaḥ
They clasped and pressed each other again and again. Dust from the ground rose like smoke of the forest fire.
vasudhāreṇusaṁvītau vasudhādharasaṁnibhau
babhrājaturyathā śailau nīhāreṇābhisaṁvṛtau
Covered with dust, they who were like mountains looked like two clifs enveloped in mists.
rākṣasena tadā bhīmaṁ kliśyamānaṁ nirīkṣya ca
uvācedaṁ vacaḥ pārthaḥ prahasañchanakairiva
Seeing Bhīma oppressed by the Rākṣasa, Pārtha, Arjuna, slowly said with smiles on his lips.
bhīma mā bhārmahābāho na tvāṁ budhyāmahe vayam
sametaṁ bhīmarūpeṇa rakṣasā śramakarśitam
O bhīma! O mighty armed hero! Fear nothing! We did not know that in the fight with terrible Rākṣasa you are tired.
