vaśampāyana uvāca
tataḥ kāvyo bhṛguśreṣṭha samanyurupagamya ha
vṛṣaparvāṇamāsīnamityuvācāvicārayan
Vaiśampāyana said: The best of Bhṛgu race, son of Kavi - Śukra, himself became angry. Coming to the place where Vṛṣaparvā was seated, he fearlessly addressed him thus:
nādharmaścarito rājan sadyaḥ phalati gauriva
śanairāvartyamāno hi karturmūlāni kṛntati
O king! Sinful acts like Earth, immediately do not bear fruit, but they do gradually and secretly cut away the roots of their doer.
putreṣu vā naptṛṣu vā na cedātmani paśyati
phalatyeva dhruvaṁ pāpaṁ gurubhuktamivodare
Such fruits, are seen, either in one ̍ s own self, or in one ̍s son, or in one ̍ s grandson. Sin must bear fruits, like rich food they cannot be digested.
yadaghāta yathā vipraṁ kacamāṅgirasaṁ tadā
vaśampāyana uvāca

vadhādanarhastasya vadhācca duhiturmama
vṛṣaparvan nibodhedaṁ tyakṣyāmi tvāṁsabāndhavam
sthātuṁ tvadviṣaye rājan na śakṣyāmi tvayā saha
As you have mal treated my daughter who did not deserve it, O Vṛṣaparvā, know, l shall leave you and all your race. O king, for this reason I can no longer stay with you.
aho māmabhijānāsi daitya mithyāpralapinam
yathemamātmano doṣaṁ na niyacchastupekṣase
Do not think, O Dānava, that l am raving or l am a liar. You think very little of your faults and do not try to correct them.
vṛṣaparvovāca
nādharmaṁ na mṛṣāvādaṁ tvayi jānāmi bhārgava
tvayi dharmaśca satyaṁ ca tat prasīdatu no bhavān
yadyasmānapahāya tvamito gacchasi bhārgava
samudraṁ sampravekṣyāmo nānyadasti parāyaṇam
Vṛṣaparvā said: O son of Bhṛgu! Never I attribute to you falsehood or impiety. Virtue and truth ever dwell in you. Be gracious to me. O son of Bhṛgu! If you really leave me and go away from this place, we shall have then to go into deep bottom of the ocean. There is no other alternative for us.
śukra uvāca
samudraṁ praviśadhvaṁ vā diśo vā dravatāsurāḥ
duhiturnāpriyaṁ soḍhuṁ śakto ̍ haṁ dayitā hi me
Śukra said: O Asura! l care very little whether you go into the bottom of the sea, of fly away to all directions, l am incapable of bearing my daughter ̍ s grief.
prasādyatāṁ devayānī jīvitaṁ yatra me sthitam
yogakṣemakaraste ̍ hamindrasyeva bṛhaspatiḥ
My life depends on her. Seek, O Asura, to please her. As Bṛhaspati always seeks the good with my ascetic powers.
vṛṣaparvovāca
yat kiṁcidasurendrāṇāṁ vidyate vasu bhārgava
bhuvi hastigavāśvaṁ ca tasya tvaṁ mama ceśvaraḥ
Vṛṣaparvā said: O son of Bhṛgu! You are absolute master of everything that belongs to Asura chief in this world - these elephants, kine, horses, nay even myself.
śukra uvāca
yat kiṁcidasti draviṇaṁ daityendrāṇāṁ mahāsura
tasyeśvaro ̍ smi yadyeṣā devayānī prasādyatām
Śukra said: O great Asura! If it is really true that I am the lord over all the wealth of Asuras, then go and try to please Devayānī.
vaiśampāyana uvāca
evamuktastathetyāha vṛṣaparvā mahākaviḥ
devayānyantikaṁ gatvā tamarthaṁ prāha bhārgavaḥ
Vaiśampāyana said: When great son of Kavi - Śukra, was thus addressed by Viśvaparva, he went to Devayānī and son of Bhṛgu told her all.
devayānyuvāca
yadi tvamīśvarastāta rājño vittasya bhārgava
gābhijānāmi tat te ̍ haṁ rājā tu vadatu svayam
Devayānī said: O son of Bhṛgu! O father! If you are really lord over Asura king and all his wealth, then let king come personally to me and speak it in my presence.
vṛṣaparvovāca
yaṁ kāmamabhikāmāsi devayāni śucismite
tat te ̍ haṁ sampradāsyāmi yadi vāpi hi durlabham
Vṛṣaparvā said: O Devayānī! O lady of sweet smiles! Whatever you desire to possess, however difficult it may be to get, l am willing to give you.
devayānyuvāca
dāsīṁ kanyāsahasreṇa śarmiṣṭhāmabhikāmaye
anu māṁ tatra gacchet sā yatra dadyācca me pitā
Devayānī said: l desire to have Śarmiṣṭhā as my maid servant and 1,000 other damsels. She must also follow me to the house of him on whom my father will bestow me.
vṛṣaparvovāca
uttiṣṭha tvaṁ gaccha dhātri śarmiṣṭhāṁ śīghramānaya
yaṁ ca kāmayate kāmaṁ devayānī karotu tam
Vṛṣaparvā said: O nurse! Go and bring quickly Śarmiṣṭhā here. Let her also act according to desire of Devayānī.
vaiśampāyana uvāca
tato dhātrī tatra gatvā śarmiṣṭhāṁ vākyamabravīt
uttiṣṭha bhadre śarmiṣṭhe jñātīnāṁ sukhamāvaha
Vaiśampāyana said: Nurse then went to Śarmiṣṭhā and told her: O amiable Śarmiṣṭhā! Rise and follow me.
tyajati brāhmaṇaḥ śiṣyān devayānyā pracoditaḥ
sā yaṁ kāmayate kāmaṁ sa kāryo ̍ dya tvayānaghe
Accomplish good for your race. Urged by Devayānī, Brāhmaṇa Śukra is about to leave his disciples Asuras. O sinless lady! You must do as Devayānī desires.
yaṁ sā kāmayate kāmaṁ karavāṇyahamadya tam
yadyevamāhvayecchukro devayānīkṛte hi mām
madyoṣānmā gamacchukro devayānī ca matkṛte
Śarmiṣṭhā said: l shall cheerfully do as Devayānī desires. Both Śukra and Devayānī must not leave Asuras through any fault of mine.
vaiśampāyana uvāca
tataḥ kanyāsahasreṇa vṛtā śibikayā tadā
piturniyogāt tvaritā niścakrāma purottamāt
Vaiśampāyana said: Having been commanded by her father, Śarmiṣṭhā with 1,000 maidens came out of her father ̍ s excellent palace.
śarmiṣṭhovāca
ahaṁ dāsīsahasreṇa dāsī te paricārikā
anu tvāṁ tatra yāsyāmi yatra dāsyati te pitā
Śarmiṣṭhā said: l am your maid servant with my 1,000 maids. l shall follow you where your father will bestow you.
devayānyuvāca
stuvato duhitāhaṁ te yācataḥ pratigṛhṇataḥ
stūyamānasya duhitā kathaṁ dāsī bhaviṣyasi
Devayānī said: l am daughter of one who is hired chanter of praises, who asks for alms and accepts them, whereas you are daughter of one who is adored. Why should you become my maid servant?
śarmiṣṭhovāca
yena kenacidārtānāṁ jñātīnāṁ sukhamāvahet
atastvāmanuyāsyāmi yatra dāsyati te pitā
Śarmiṣṭhā said: One must try to do good to one ̍ s affected relatives. Therefore, l shall follow you where your father will bestow you.
vaiśampāyana uvāca
pratiśrute dāsabhāve duhitrā vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ
devayānī nṛpaśreṣṭha pitaraṁ vākyamabravīt
Vaiśampāyana said: O best of kings! When Śarmiṣṭhā thus promised to be maid servant of Devayānī, she then spoke thus to her father:
devayānyuvāca
praviśāmi puraṁ tāta tuṣṭāsmi dvijasattama
amoghaṁ tava vijñānamasti vidyābalaṁ cate
Devayānī said: O best of Brāhmaṇas! O father! l am satisfied. l know your science and power of knowledge is not futile.
vaiśampāyana uvāca
evamukto duhitrā sa dvijaśreṣṭho mahāyaśāḥ
pravamukto duhitrā sa dvijaśreṣṭho mahāyaśāḥ
Vaiśampāyana said: Having been thus addressed by his daughter, that best of Brāhmaṇas, that illustrious man entered the capital with all happiness, where he was worshipped by all Dānavas.
