vaiśampāyana uvāca
tataḥ satyavatī kāle vadhūṁ snātāmṛtau tadā
saṁveśayantī śayane śanairvacanamabravīt
Vaiśampāyana said: When her daughter in law performed her purifying bath after her season, Satyavatī led her to a luxury bed room and spoke to her thus:
kausalye devaraste ̍ sti so ̍ dya tvānupravekṣyati
apramattā pratīkṣainaṁ niśīthe hyāgamiṣyati
O princess of Kausalya! Your husband has an elder brother, who will today come to you. Wait for him without falling asleep.
śvaśrvāstad vacanaṁ śrutvā śayānā śayane śubhe
sācantayat tadā bhīṣmamanyāṁśca kurupuṅgavān
Having heard these words of her mother in law, amiable lady, as she lay on her bed in her bed room, began to think of Bhīṣma and other Kuru chiefs.
tato ̍ mbikāyāṁ prathamaṁ nityuktaḥ satyavānṛṣiḥ
dīpyamāneṣu dīpeṣu śaraṇaṁ praviveśa ha
Then truthful Ṛṣi, who had given his promise as regards Ambikā first, came to her bed room while the lamp was burning.
tasya kṛṣṇsya kapilāṁ jaṭāṁ dīpte ca locane
babhrūṇi caiva śmaśrūṇi dṛṣṭvā devī nyamīlayat
Seeing his dark visage, his matted locks of copper colour, his blazing eyes and his grim beard, lady closed her eyes in fear.
sambabhūva tayā sārdhaṁ mātuḥ priyacikīrṣayā
bhayāt kāśisutāṁ taṁ tu nāśaknodabhivīkṣitum
But Ṛṣi, inorder to accomplish his mother ̍ s desire, united with her. Daughter of the king of Kāśi was not able to open her eyes out of fear.
tato niṣkrāntamāgamya mātā putramuvāca ha
apyasyā guṇavān putra rājaputro bhaviṣyati
When he came out, mother asked son: Will princess have an accomplished son?
niśamya tad vaco māturvyāsaḥ satyavatīsutaḥ
nāgāyutasamaprāṇo vidvān rājarṣisattamaḥ
mahābhāgo mahāvīryo mahābuddhirnjaviṣyati
tasya cāpi śataṁ putrā bhaviṣyanti mahātmanaḥ
Hearing his maother ̍ s words, son of Satyavatī, self controlled and greatly wise Vyāsa said: Son that will be brought forth by the princess, will be equal to 10,000 elephants in strength. He will be greatly fortunate, greatly powerful and vastly intelligent. Noble prince will have 100 sons.
kiṁ tu mātuḥ sa vaiguṇyādandha eva bhaviṣyati
tasya tad vacanaṁ śrutvā mātā putramathābravīt
nāndhaḥ kurūṇāṁ nṛpatiranurūpastapodhana
jñātivaṁśasya goptāraṁ pitṝṇāṁ vaṁśavardhanam
dvitīyaṁ kuruvaṁśasya rājānaṁ dātumarhasi
But for the fault of his mother, he will be blind! Having heard these words of his son, mother said: O great ascetic! How can one who is blind be a king worthy of Kurus?
How can one protect his relatives and friends and increase glory of his fathers and continue the dynasty, who is blind?
Therefore, you should give another king to the Kuru race!
sa tatheti pratijñāya niścakrāma mahāyaśāḥ
sāpi kālena kausalyā suṣuve ̍ ndhaṁ tamātmajam
punareva tu sā devī paribhāṣya snuṣáṁ tataḥ
ṛṣimāvāhayat satyā yathā pūrvamariṁdama
tatastenaiva vidhinā maharṣistāmapadyata
ambikālikāmathābhyāgādṛṣiṁ dṛṣṭvā ca sāpi tam
vivarṇā pāṇḍusaṁkāśā samapadyata bhārata
Having promised this, illustrious Vyāsa went away. In due time princess of Kosalya gave birth to a blind son. O chastiser of foes! After securing the consent of her daughter in law, Satyavatī soon after again summoned Vyāsa as she did it before. Vyāsa came according to his promise and went to the second wife Ambālikā of his brother in a proper time, but she became pale and discoloured with fear on seeing Ṛṣi.
tāṁ bhītāṁ pāṇḍusaṁkāśāṁ viṣṇṇāṁ prekṣya bhārata
vyāsaḥ satyavatīputra idaṁ vacanamabravīt
O descendant of Bharata race! Seeing her pale and discoluored in fear and afflicted with grief,
yasmāt pāṇḍutvamāpannā virūpaṁ prekṣya māmiha
tasmādeva sutaste vai pāṇḍureva bhaviṣyati
Son of Satyavatī, Vyāsa, spoke to her thus: As you have become pale by seeing me ugly, so your son will be also pale in complexion.
ityuktvā sa nirakrāmad bhagavānṛṣisattamaḥ
tato niṣkrāntamālokya satyā putramathābravīt
śaśaṁsa sa punarmātre tasya bālasya pāṇḍutām
O beautiful featured lady! Name of your son will be accordingly Pāṇḍu - pale.
Having said this, excellent and illustrious Ṛṣi came out and met his mother who asked him about the child. He told her that the child will be pale.
taṁ mātā punarevānyamekaṁ putramayācata
tatheti ca maharṣistāṁ mātaraṁ pratyabhāṣata
His mother Satyavatī, hearing this, begged again for another son. Ṛṣi replied: Be it so!
tataḥ kumāraṁ sā devī prāptakālamajījanat
pāṇḍuṁ lakṣaṇasampannaṁ dīpyamānamiva śriyā
Ambālikā gave birth to a son in due time. He was of pale complexion, very effulgent and endued with all auspicious marks.
yasyā putrā maheṣvāsā jajñire pañca pāṇḍavāḥ
ṛtukāle tato jyeṣṭhāṁ vadhūṁ tasmai nyayojayat
This son afterwards begot those mighty bow men, 5 Pāṇḍavas. Some time after, when her eldest daughter in law was again in her season, she was asked by Satyavatī to go to Vyāsa.
sā turūpaṁ ca gandhaṁ ca maharṣeḥ pravicintya tam
nākarod vacanaṁ devyā bhayāt surasutopamā
But she, endued with the beauty of a daughter of celestials, remembering grim visage and strong odour of great Ṛṣi, did not act according to the request of Satyavatī out of fear.
tataḥ svairbhūṣaṇairdāsīṁ bhūṣayitvāpsaropamām
preṣayāmāsa kṛṣṇāya tataḥ kāśipateḥ sutā
Having decked a maid servant like Apsara with her ornaments, daughter of the king of Kāśi sent her to Vyāsa.
sā tamṛṣimanuprāptaṁ pratyudgamyābhivādya ca
saṁviveśābhyanujñātā satkṛtyopacacāra ha
She rose up and saluted him as Ṛṣi came. After having waited upon him respectfully, she took her seat near him when asked.
kāmopabhogena rahastasyāṁ tuṣṭimagādṛṣiḥ
tayā sahoṣito rājan maharṣiḥ saṁśitavrataḥ
uttiṣṭhannavravīdenāmabhujiṣyā bhaviṣyasi
ayaṁ ca te śubhe garbhaḥ śreyānudaramāgataḥ
dharmātmā bhavitā loke sarvabuddhimatāṁ varaḥ
O king! Ṛṣi of rigid vows was greatly pleased with her. When he rose to go away, he said: O amiable girl! You will no longer remain as a maid servant! Your son will be greatly fortunate, virtuous and foremost of all intelligent men on Earth!
sa jajñe viduro nāma kṛṣṇadvaipāyanātmajaḥ
dhṛtarāṣṭrasya vai bhrātā pāṇḍoścaiva mahātmanaḥ
Son of Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana thus born was known by the name of Vidura. He was thus the brother of illustrious Dhṛtarāṣṭra and Pāṇḍu.
dharmo vidurarūpeṇa śāpāt tasya mahātmanaḥ
māṇḍavyasyārthatatvajñaḥ kāmakrodhavivarjitaḥ
God of Justice was thus born as Vidura in consequence of the curse of the Ṛṣi Māṇḍavya. He was free from desire and anger.
kṛṣṇadvaipāyano ̍ pyetat satyavatyai nyavedayat
pralambhamātmanaścaiva śūdrasyāḥ putrajanma ca
sa dharmasyānṛṇo bhūtvā punarmātrā sametya ca
tasyai garbhaṁ samāvedya tatraivāntaradhīyata
When Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana was met by his mother as before, he told her how he had been deceived by the eldest of princess and how he had begotten a son on a Śūdra woman. Having said this, he disappeared in her sight.
ete vicitravīryasya kṣetre dvaipāyanādapi
jajñire devagarbhāḥ kuruvaṁśavivardhanāḥ
Thus were begotten on the wives of Vicitravīrya 3 sons by Dvaipāyana Vyāsa, as effulgent as celestial children, expenders of Kuru race.
