Vidura starts to instruct Yudhiṣṭhira on dangerous situation

 paureṣu vinivṛtteṣu viduraḥ satyadharmavit

bodhayan pāṇḍavaśceṣṭhamidaṁ vacanamabravīt


When citizens had left Pāṇḍavas, Vidura, learned in all the precepts of virtue, spoke thus to the eldest Pāṇḍava in order to warn him of danger.


prājñaḥ prājñapralāpajñaḥ pralāpajñamidaṁ vacaḥ

prājñaṁ prājñaḥ pralāpajñaḥ pralāpajñaṁ vaco ̍ bravīt


Learned Vidura, conversant with Mleccha language, spoke thus to Yudhiṣṭhira, also conversant with Mleccha language in Mleccha language.


yo jānāti paprajñāṁ nītiśāstrānusāriṇīm

vijñāyeha tathā kuryādāpadaṁ nistared yathā


He who knows the schemes of others - enemies, according to the dictates of political science, knowing it, should act in such a way as to avoid all dangers.


alohaṁ niśitaṁ śastraṁ śarīraparikartanam

yo vetti na tu ghnanti pratighātavidaṁ dviṣaḥ


He who knows that there are sharp weapons capable of cutting body through not made of iron and understands also the means of warding them off, can never be injured by enemy.


kakṣaghnaḥ śiśiraghnaśca mahākakṣe bilaukasaḥ

na dehaditi cātmānaṁ yo rakṣati sa jīvati


He lives who protects himself by the knowledge that neither consumer of straw and wood not the drier of dews burns the inmates of a hole in the deep forest.


nācakṣurveti panthānaṁ nācakṣurvindate diśaḥ

nādhṛtirbuddhimāpnoti budhyasvaivaṁ prabodhitaḥ


Blind man sees not his way, for the blind man has no knowledge of direction. He who has no firmness, never acquires prosperity. Knowing this, keep yourself always alert.


anāptairdattamādatte naraḥ śastramalohajam

śvāviccharaṇamāsādya pramucyeta hutāśanāt


Man who takes a weapon which is not made of iron and which is given to him by his enemy, can escape from the fire by making his house like a hole of a jackal.


caran mārgān vijānāti nakṣatrairvindate diśaḥ

ātmanā cātmanaḥ pañca pīḍayan nānupīḍyate


By traveling man may know the ways and by star he can sacertain the direction. He who keeps his 5 senses under control, can never be oppressed by his enemy.


evamuktaḥ pratyuvāca dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ

viduraṁ viduṣāṁ śreṣṭhaṁ jñātamityeva pāṇḍavaḥ


Having been thus addressed, king of virtue, Pāṇḍava Yudhiṣṭhira, replied thus to that foremost of learned men, illustrious Vidura: I have understood you.


anuśikṣyānugamyaitān kṛtvā caiva pradakṣiṇam

pāṇḍavānabhyanujñāya viduraḥ prayayau gṛhān


Vidura, thus having instructed Pāṇḍavas, walked round them and bidding them farewell returned to his house.


nivṛtte vidure cāpi bhīṣme paurajane tathā

ajātaśatrumāsādya kuntī vacanamabravīt


Vidura, Bhīṣma and citizens having gone back, Kuntī came to Ajātaśatru - Yudhiṣṭhira and spoke thus:


kṣattā yadabravīd vākyaṁ janamadhye ̍ bruvanniva

tvayā ca sa tathetyukto jānīmo na ca tad vayam


What Kṣatta - Vidura, said to you in the midst of many people, so indistinctly as if he said nothing and what you said similarly in reply was not understood by us.


yadīdaṁ śakyamasmābhirjñātuṁ na ca sadoṣavat

śrotumicchāmi tat sarvaṁ saṁvādaṁ tava tasya ca


If it is not improper for us to hear all that passed between you ahd him.


yudhiṣṭhira uvāca

gṛhādangiśca boddhavya iti māṁ viduro ̍ bravīt

panthāśca vo nāviditaḥ kaścit spāditi dharmadhīḥ


Yudhiṣṭhira said: Virtuous Vidura said to me that I must know that the house at Varaṇāvata is made of inflamable materials. He further said the way of escape also will be known to you.


jitendriyaśca vasudhāṁ prāpsyatīti ca me ̍ bravīt

vijñātamiti tat sarvaṁ pratyukto viduro mayā


He told me: The man who is self controlled wins sovereignty of the whole world. I replied to Vidura: I have understood you!


vaiśampāyana uvāca

aṣṭame ̍ hani rohiṇyāṁ prayātāḥ phālgunasya te

vāraṇāvatamāsādya dadṛśurnāgaraṁ janam


Vaiṣampāyana said: Pāṇḍavas started for Varaṇāvata on the 8th day of the month of Phālguni, when star Rohiṇī was ascendant and arriving there they saw the town and its people.
