vaiśampāyana uvāca
pāṇḍavān dhhārtarāṣṭrāṁśca kṛtāstrān prasamīkṣya saḥ
gurvarthaṁ dakṣiṇākāle prāpte ̍ manyata vai guruḥ
Vaiśampāyana said: Seeing sons of Pāṇḍu and Dhṛtarāṣṭra accomplished in arms, Droṇa thought that the time had come when he could demand Guru Dakṣiṇa.
tataḥ śiṣyān samānīya ācāryo ̍ rthamacodayat
droṇaḥ sarvānaśeṣeṇa dakṣiṇārthaṁ mahīpate
O king! One day assembling his disciples together, Guru Droṇa asked his Dakṣiṇa from them all saying:
pañcālarājaṁ drupade gṛhītvā raṇamūrdhani
paryānayata bhadraṁ vaḥ sā khyāt paramadakṣiṇā
Seize king of Pāñcāla, Drupada, in battle and bring him to me! That will be the most acceptable Dakṣiṇa for me!
tathetyuktvā tu te sarve rathestūrṇaṁ prahāriṇaḥ
ācāryadhanadānārthaṁ droṇena sahitā yayuḥ
Saying: Be it so! they all ascended their chariots with their arms and marched out with Droṇa in order to pay the Dakṣiṇa to their Guru.
tato ̍ bhijagmuḥ pañcālān nighnantaste nararṣabhāḥ
mamṛdustasya nagaraṁ drupadasya mahaujasaḥ
duryodhanaśca karṇaśca yuyutsuśca mahābalah
duḥśāsano vikarṇaśca jalasaṁdhaḥ sulocanaḥ
ete cānye ca bahavaḥ kumārā bahuvikramāḥ
ahaṁ pūrvamahaṁ pūrvamityevaṁ kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ
Those best of man destroyed Pañcālās and went to the capital of greatly powerful Drupada and attacked it. Duryodhana, Karṇa, greatly strong Yuyutsu, Duḥśāsana, Vikarṇa, Jalasandha, Sulocana. These and many other princes of great prowess, all foremost of Kṣatriyas, competed with one another to become foremost in attack.
tato vararathārūḍhāḥ kumārāḥ sādibhiḥ saha
praviśya nagaraṁ sarve rājamārgamupāyayuḥ
Princes, riding on first class chariots and followed by cavalry, entered hostile capital and proceeded along its streets.
tasmin kāle tu pāñcālaḥ śrutvā dṛṣṭvā mahad balam
bhrātṛbhiḥ sahito rājaṁstvarayā niryayau gṛhāt
At this time king of Pāñcālas, seeing great army and hearing its roar, soon came out of his palace with all his brothers.
tatastu kṛtasaṁnāhā yajñenasahodarāḥ
śaravarṣaṇi muñcantaḥ praṇeduḥ sarva eve te
King Yajñasena - Drupada, was well armed, but he was assailed by Kurus with a shower of arrows, all uttering their war cry.
tato rathena śabhreṇa samāsādya tu kauravān
yajñasenaḥ śarān ghorān vavarṣa yudhi durjayaḥ
Invincible warrior Yajñasena, riding on his white chariot, attacked Kurus and began to rain his fearful arrows.
vaiśampāyana uvāca
pūrvameva tu sammantrya pārtho droṇamathābravīt
darpodrekāt kumārāṇāmācāryaṁ dvijasattamam
Vaiśampāyana said: Seeing the pride of princes, Pārtha Arjuna spoke thus to Guru, that excellent Brāhmaṇa Droṇa.
eṣāṁ parākramasyānte vayaṁ kuryāma sāhasam
etairaśakyaḥ pāñcālo grahītuṁ raṇamūrdhani
We will display our power when they would finish theirs. They are not capable of killing king of Pañcālās in battle.
evamuktvā tu kaunteyā bhrātṛbhiḥ sahito ̍ naghaḥ
ardhakośe tu nagarādatiṣṭhad bahireva saḥ
Having said this, Arjuna with his brothers waited outside the city at a distance of a mile.
drupadaḥ kauravān dṛṣṭvā prādhāvata samantataḥ
śarajālena mahatā mohayan kauravīṁ camūm
tamudyataṁ rathenaikamāśukāriṇamāhave
anekamiva saṁtrāsānmenire tatra kauravāḥ
Seeing Kaurāvas, Drupada rushed forward and afflicted Kuru army with a shower of arrows. Such was his lightness of motion on the field of battle that though he was fighting alone on a single chariot, Kurus thought in fear that there was more than one Drupada.
drupadasya śarā ghorā viceruḥ sarvato diśam
tataḥ śaṅkhāśca bheryaśca mṛdaṅgāśca sahasraśaḥ
prāvādyanta mahārāja pāñcālānāṁ niveśane
siṁhanādaśca saṁjajñe pāñcānāṁ mahātmanām
Fearful arrows of Drupada fell on all sides and thousands of conches, trumpets and drums began to sound form the side of Pāñcālās in their houses. O great king! A terrible roar, like that of the lion, rose from the mighty Pāñācālas. Great sound of the twang of their bow strings seemed to rend the very sky.
dhanurjyātalaśabdaśca saṁspṛśya gaganaṁ mahān
duryodhano vikarṇaśca subāhudīrghalocanaḥ
duḥśāsanaśca saṁkruddhaḥ śaravarṣairavākiran
so ̍ tividdho maheṣvāsaḥ pārṣato yudhi durjayaḥ
vyadhamat tānyanīkāni tatkṣaṇādeva bhārata
duryodhanaṁ vikarṇaṁ ca karṇaṁ cāpi mahābalam
nānānṛpasutān vīrān sainyāni vividhāni ca
alātacakravat sarvaṁ caran bāṇairatarpayat
Then Duryodhana, Vikarṇa, Subāhu, Dīrghalocana, Duḥśāsana, becoming furious, began to shower arrows on the enemy. Mighty bow man Drupada, son of Pṛṣata, invincible in battle, though pierced with arrows, instantly began to afflict hostile army. O descendant of Bharata race! Careering over the field of battle, like a fiery wheel, he smote with his arrows Duryodhana, Vikarṇa and many other heroic princes and various other soldiers and slaked their thirst for battle.
tatastu nāgarāḥ sarve musalairyaṣṭibhistadā
abhyavarṣanta kauravyān varṣamāṇā ghanā iva
Then citizens showered on Kurus clubs, maces, other missiles, like clouds showering rain.
sabālavṛddhāste paurāḥ kauravānbhyayustadā
śrutvā sutumulaṁ yuddhaṁ kauravāneva bhārata
dravanti sma nadanti sma krośantaḥ pāṇḍavān prati
pāḍvāstu svayaṁ śrutvā ārtānāṁ lomaharṣaṇam
abhivādya tato droṇaṁ rathānāruruhustadā
yudhiṣṭhiraṁ nivāryāśu mā yudhyasveti pāṇḍavam
O descendant of Bharata race! Young and old, all the citizens, hearing of the battle, rushed out and assailed Kurus. Kurus broke and fled, wailing to Pāṇḍavas and Pāṇḍavas, hearing their terrible wail, ascended their cars after duly worshipping Droṇa. Arjuna, hastily asking Yudhiṣṭhira not to engage in the fight by saying: Do not fight!
mādreyau cakrarathau tu phālgunaśca tadākarot
senāgrago bhīmasenaḥ sadābhūda gadayā saha
At that time appointing sons of Mādrī Nakula and Sahadeva as protectors of his chariot wheels, rushed out. Bhīma, ever in front, ran ahead with his club in hand.
tadā śatrusvanaṁ śrutvā bhrātṛbhiḥ sahito ̍ naghaḥ
ayājjavena kaunteyo rathenānādayan diśaḥ
Sinless son of Kuntī, Arjuna, thus accompanied by his brothers, hearing the shouts of the enemy, advanced to them, filling whole region with the rattle of the wheels of his chariot.
pāñcālānāṁ tataḥ senāmudbhūtārṇavaniḥ svanām
bhīmaseno mahābāhurdaṇḍapāṇirivāntakaḥ
praviveśa mahāsenāṁ makaraḥ sāgaraṁ yathā
svayamabhyadravad bhīmo nāgānīkaṁ gadādharaḥ
As Makara enters thge sea, so mighty armed Yama like Bhīma with his club in his hand entered Pāṇcāla ranks and roared as fiercely as the ocean in a tempest. Ever skillful in battle, Bhīma, Pārtha, upraising his club, attacked soldiers riding on elephants with the power of his arms like great destroyer himself.
sa yuddhakuśalaḥ pārtho bāhuvīryeṇa cātulaḥ
ahanat kuñjarānīkaṁ gadayā kālarūpadhṛt
Those huge animals like mountains, struck with the club of Bhīma, had their heads broken into pieces and they fell down covered with blood, like cliffs loosened by thunder.
te gajā girisaṁkāśāḥ kṣaranto rudhiraṁ bahu
bhīmasenasya gadayā bhinnamastakapiṇḍakāḥ
patanti dviradā bhūmau vajraghātādivācalāḥ
gajānaśvān rathāṁścaiva pātayāmāsa pāṇḍavaḥ
padātīṁśca rathāṁścaiva nyavadhīdarjunāgrajaḥ
gopāla iva daṇḍena yathā paśugaṇān vane
cālayan rathanāgāṁśca saṁcacāla vṛkodaraḥ
Bhīma felled to the ground elephants and horses and cars by thousands and killed many foot soldiers and car warriors. As herdsman drives the cattle with his staff in the woods, so did Bhīmasena drive before him the chariots and elephants of hostile force.
vaiśampāyana uvāca
bhāradvājapriyaṁ kartumudyataḥ phālgunastadā
pārṣataṁ śarajālena kṣipannāgāt sa pāṇḍavaḥ
hayaughāṁśca rathaughāṁśca gajaughāṁśca samantataḥ
pātayan samare rājan yugāntāgniriva jvalan
vaiśampāyana said: Arjuna, eager to do the favourite work for Droṇa, felled Drupada from his elephant, covering him with arrows. O king! Like fire at the end of Yuga, he felled in battle thousands of horses, cars and elephants.
tataste hanyamānā vai pāñcālāḥ sṛñjayāstathā
śarairnāvidhaistūrṇaṁ pārthaṁ saṁchādya sarvaśaḥ
siṁhanādaṁ mukhaiḥ kṛtvā samayudhyanta pāṇḍavam
Thereupon all Pāñcālas and Sṛñjayas, being thus attacked by Arjuna, assailed Pārtha with the shower of weapons of various kinds.
tad yuddhamabhavad ghoraṁ sumahādbhutadarśanam
siṁhanādasvanaṁ śrutvā nāmṛṣyat pākaśāsaniḥ
They uttered great shouts like the roars of lions and they desperately attacked Arjuna. Battle became fearful and furious to be hold. Hearing their great leonine shouts, Arjuna became filled with wrath.
tataḥ kīrīṭī sahasā pāñcālān samare ̍ dravat
chādayanniṣujālena mahatā mohayanniva
Arjuna immediately assailed Pāñcālās in the battle and covering them with a shower of arrows, he greatly confused them.
śīghramabhyasyato bāṇān saṁdadhānasya cāniśam
nāntaraṁ dadṛśe kiṁcit kaunteyasya taśasvinaḥ
They who saw Kaunteya at that time, could not mark any intervals between his fixing arrows on bow string and letting them off.
siṁhanādaśca saṁjajñe sādhuśabdena miśritaḥ
tataḥ pāñcālarājastu tathā satyajitā saha
tvaramāṇo ̍ bhidudrāva mahendraṁ śambaro yathā
mahatā śaravarṣeṇa pārthaḥ pāñcālamāvṛṇot
Whole place was filled with leonine shouts mixed with cheers of approval. Thereupon king of Pāñcālas, accompanied with Saytajit - his commander in chief, rushed towards Arjuna with speed, as Indra did to Dānava Śambara. Arjuna covered king of Pāñcāla with thick shower of arrows.
tato halahalāśabda āsīt pāñcālake bale
jighṛkṣati mahāsiṁho gajanāmiva yūthapam
Thereupon arose great uproar amongst Pāñcāla host, like the roar of great lions when springing on the leader of a heard of elephants.
dṛṣṭvā pārthaṁ tadā āyāntaṁ satyajit satyavikramaḥ
pāñcālaṁ vai pariprepsurdhanaṁjayamupāvat
tatastvarjunapālau yuddḥya samupāgatau
vyakṣobhayetāṁ tau sainyamindravairocanāviva
Seeing Arjuna rush to Pāñcāla king for slaying him, greatly powerful Styajit attacked him. Two heroes - Arjuna and Satyajit, rushed upon each other like Indra on Virocana and they broke each other ̍ s ranks.
tataḥ satyajitaṁ pārtho daśabhirmarmabhedibhiḥ
vivyādha balavad gāḍhaṁ tadadbhutamivābhavat
Thereupon Arjuna pierced Satyajit with 10 keen arrows at which feat spectators were all amazed.
tataḥ śaraśataiḥ pārthaṁ pāñcālaḥ śīghramārdayat
pārthastu śaravarṣeṇa chādyamāno mahārathaḥ
vegaṁ cakre mahāvego dhanurjyāmavamṛjya ca
tataḥ satyajitaścāpi chittvā rājānamabhyayāt
Thereupon Satyajit covered Arjuna with 100 arrows. That great car warrior Arjuna rubbed his bow string in order to increase the force and velocity og his arrows. Then covering enemy with a shower of arrows, he cut off the bow of Satyajit and rushed on king Drupada.
athānyad dhanurādāya satyajid vegavattaram
sāśvaṁ sasūyaṁ sarathaṁ vivyādha satvaraḥ
But Satyajit immediately took up another bow and soon pierced with arrows Arjuna, his chariot, charioteer and horses.
sa taṁ na mamṛṣe pārthaḥ pāñcālenārdito yudhi
tatastasya vināśārthaṁ satvaraṁ vyasṛjaccharān
Thus being assailed, Arjuna did not forgive Satyajit. In order to kill him soon, Arjuna pierced him with a number of arrows.
hayān dhvajaṁ dhanurmuṣṭimubhau tau pārṣṇisārathī
sa tathā bhidyamānoṣu kārmukeṣu punaḥ punaḥ
hayeṣu viniyukteṣu vimukho ̍ bhavadāhave
sa satyajitamālokya tathā vimukhamāhave
vegena mahatā rājannabhyavarṣata pāṇḍavam
tadā cakre mahad yuddhamarjuno jayatāṁ varaḥ
his horses, flags, bow, clenched fist, charioteer and the attendant at his back. Seeing his bow repeatedly cut down and his horses slain as often, Satyajit desisted from fight. Seeing Satyajit thus desisted from the fight, king Drupada attacked Arjuna with great speed. Then foremost victorious Arjuna fought a wonderful battle.
tasya pārtho dhanuśchittvā dhvajaṁ corvyāmapātayat
pañcabhistasya vivyādha hayān sūtaṁ ca sāyakaiḥ
Cutting off his bow and felling his flag staff on the ground he pierced horses and charioteer of his enemy with 5 arrows.
tata utsṛjya taccāpamādadānaṁ śarāvaram
khaṅgamudbhṛtya kaunteyaḥ siṁhanādamathākaret
Thereupon Arjuna, throwing aside his bow and taking off his quiver, took up a scimitar and sent forth a leonine shout.
pāñcālasya rathasyeṣāmāplutya sahasāpatat
pāñcālarathamāsthāya avitrasto dhanaṁjayaḥ
vikṣobhyāmbhonidhiṁ pārthastaṁ nāgamiva so ̍ grahīt
tatastu sarvapāñcālā vidravanti diśo daśa
He suddenly leaped from his chariot and fell on that of Pāñcāla king. Arjuna stood fearlessly on the chariot of Pāñcāla king. He seized Drupada as Garuḍa seized a huge snake after agitating waters of deep sea. Thereupon all Pāñcālas ran away in all directions.
darśayan sarvasainyānāṁ sa bāhvorbalamātmanaḥ
siṁhanādasvanaṁ kṛtvā nirjagāma dhanaṁjayaḥ
Showing the prowess of arms to all the hosts, Arjuna, sending forth a leonine shout, came out of Pāñcāla ranks.
āyāntamarjunaṁ dṛṣṭvā kumārāḥ sahitāstadā
mamṛdustasya nagaraṁ drupadasya mahātmanaḥ
Seeing him return with his captive, princes laid waste the capital of illustrious Drupada.
arjuna uvāca
sambandhī kuruvīrāṇāṁ drupado rājasattamaḥ
mā vadhīstadbalaṁ bhīma gurudānaṁ pradīyatām
Arjuna said: This best of kings, Drupada, is a relative of Kuru heroes. Therefore, O Bhīma, do not kill his soldiers. Let us only give out gift for our Guru.
vaiśampāyana uvāca
bhīmasenastadā rājannarjunena nivāritaḥ
atṛpto yuddhadharmeṣu nyavartata mahābalaḥ
Vaiśampāyana said: O king! Thus prevented by Arjuna, greatly strong Bhīma, though unsatiated with battle, refrained from the act of slaughter.
te yajñasenaṁ drupadaṁ gṛhītvā raṇamūrdhani
upājahruḥ sahāmātyaṁ droṇasya bharatarṣabha
O best of Bharata race! Thus seizing Drupada in battle with his ministers, they offered him to Droṇa.
