vaiśampāyana uvāca
pauraveṇātha vayasā yayātirnahuṣātmajaḥ
prītiyukto nṛpaśreṣṭhaścacāra viṣayān priyān
Vaiśampāyana said: Having received youth of Pūru, Yayāti, son of Nahuṣa, that best of kings, was exceedingly delighted. He again indulged in pleasures of life.
yathākāmaṁ yathotsāhaṁ yathākālaṁ yathāsukham
dharmāviruddhaṁ rājendra yathārhati sa eva hi
He enjoyed himself to the full extent of his desire and to the full limit of his power, as much as he desired and as seasons called forth. But, O king! He did nothing against the precepts of religion.
devānatarpayad yajñaiḥ śrāddhaistadvat pitṝnapi
dīnānanugrahairiṣṭaiḥ kāmaiśca dvijasattamān
He pleased celestials by performing sacrifices, Pitṛs by Śrāddhas, poor by charities and good Brāhmaṇa by fulfilling their desires.
atithīnannapānaiśca viśaśca paripālanaiḥ
ānṛśaṁsyena śūdrāṁśca dasyūn saṁnigraheṇa ca
dharmeṇa ca prajāḥ sarvā yathāvadadanurañjayan
yayātiḥ pālayāmāsa sākṣādindra ivāparaḥ
Goests by food and drink, Vaiśyas by protection, Śūdras by kindness and robbers by proper punishment, Yayāti pleased all classes of his subjects by ruling over them virtuously like Indra.
sa rājā siṁhavikrānto yuvā viṣayagocaraḥ
avirodhena dharmasya cacāra sukhamuttamam
That king was powerful sa lion. He was young and enjoyed all the pleasures of life. He enjoyed unlimited happiness without violating precepts of religion.
sa samprāpya śubhān kāmāṁstṛptaḥ khinnaśca pārthivaḥ
kālaṁ varṣasahasrāntaṁ sasmāra manujādhipaḥ
parisaṁkhyāya kālajñaḥ kalāḥ kāṣṭhāśca vīryavān
yauvanaṁ prāpya rājarṣiḥ sahasraparivatsarān
viśvācyā sahito reme vyabhrājannandane vane
alakāyāṁ sa kālaṁ tu meruśṛṅge tathottare
yadā sa paśyate kālaṁ dharmātmā taṁ mahīpatiḥ
pūrṇaṁ matvā tataḥ kālaṁ pūruṁ putra putramuvāca ha
King Yayāti became exceedingly happy in thus being able to enjoy all the best objects of enjoyments. That king of men was only sorry in remembering that 1,000 years would soon came to an end. That royal sage, learned in the mystery of time and possessed of great prowess, having obtained youth for 1,000 years and watching proper Kālas and Kāṣṭhās. Sported with Apsara Viśvācyā, some time in the garden of Indra, Nandana, sometimes in Alakā and sometimes on the summit of Meru mountain. That virtuous king then found that fixed time 1,000 years had come to an end. He then called Pūru and addressed him thus:
yathākāmaṁ yathotsāhaṁ yathākālamariṁdama
sevitā viṣayāḥ putra yauvanena mayā tava
Oson! O chastiser of foes! l have enjoyed with your youth to the full extent of my desires and to the full limit of my power and all according to their seasons.
na jātu kāmaḥ kāmānāmupabhogena śāmyati
haviṣā kṛṣṇavartmeva bhūya evābhivardhate
But desires never die, they are never satiated by indulgence. By indulgence they flame up like sacrificial fire with ghee poured into it.
yat pṛthivyāṁ vrīhiyavaṁ paśavaḥ striyaḥ
ekasyāpi na paryāptaṁ tasmāt tṛṣṇāṁ parityajet
If one becomes sole lord of all the Earth with its paddy, oats, gems, beasts and women, still it will not be considered by him enough. Therefore, thirst for enjoyment should be abandoned.
yā dustyajā durmatibhiryā na jīryati jīryataḥ
yo ̍ sau prāṇāntiko rogastāṁ tṛṣṇṁ tvajataḥ sukham
Thirst for enjoyments, which is difficult to be cast off by the wicked, which does not fail even with falling life, is truly a fatal disease of a man. To get rid of this thirst is real happiness.
pūrṇaṁ varṣasahasraṁ me viṣayāsaktacetasaḥ
tathāpyanudinaṁ tṛṣṇā mamaiteṣvabhijāyate
My mind was attached to the pleasures of life for full 1,000 years. My thirst for them, however, without being abated, is being increased daily.
tasmādenāmahaṁ tyaktvā brahmaṇyādhāya mānasam
nirdvandvo nirmamo bhūtvā cariṣyāmi mṛgaiḥ saha
Therefore, l shall get rid of it. l shall fix my mind on Brahman and becoming peaceful and having no attachments, l shall pass the rest of my days in the forest with innocent deer.
pūro prīti ̍ smi bhadraṁ te gṛhāṇedaṁ svayauvanam
rājyaṁ cedaṁ gṛhaṇa tvaṁ tvaṁ hi me priyakṛt sutaḥ
O Pūru! l am pleased with you! Take back your youth. Prosperity be to you! Receive my kingdom! You are my son, who has done my favorite work!
vaiśampāyana uvāca
pratipede jarāṁ rājā yayātirnāhuṣastadā
yauvanaṁ pratipede ca pūruḥ svaṁ punarātmanaḥ
Vaiṣampāyana said: Yayāti, son of Nahuṣa, then received back his own old age and his son Pūru also received back his youth.
abhiṣektukāmaṁ nṛpatiṁ pūruṁ putraṁ kanīyasam
brāhmaṇapramukhā varṇā idaṁ vacanamabruvan
Yayāti became desirous of installing his youngest son Pūru on the throne, but 4 orders of his subjects with Brāhmaṇas at their head thus addressed him:
kathaṁ śukrasya naptāraṁ devayānyāḥ sutaṁ prabho
ṣṭhaṁ yadumatikramya rājyaṁ pūro prayacchasi
O lord! How can you install Pūru on the throne, passing over your eldest son Yadu, born of Devayānī and grandson of Śukra?
yadurjyeṣṭhastava suto jātastamanu turvasuḥ
śarmiṣṭhāyāḥ suto druhyustato ̍ nuḥ pūreva ca
Yadu is your eldest son, after him was Turvasu, then Śarmiṣṭhā ̍ s son Druhyu, Anu and at last Pūru.
kathaṁ jyeṣṭhānatikramya kanīyān rājyamarhati
etat sambodhayāmastvāṁ dharmaṁ tvaṁ pratipālaya
How it is be proper to pass all over the elders and install the youngest? We represent this and act according to the precepts of religion!
yayātiruvāca
brāhmaṇapramukhā varṇāḥ sarve śṛṇvantu me vacaḥ
jyeṣṭhaṁ prati yathā rājyaṁ na deyaṁ me kathaṁcana
Yayāti said:Hear all of you of 4 orders of castes, with Brāhmaṇas at their head, why my kingdom should not be given to my eldest son:
mama jyeṣṭhena yadunā niyogo nānupālitaḥ
pratikūlaḥ pituryaśca na sa putraḥ satāṁ mataḥ
My commands were disobeyed by my eldest son. Opinion of the wise men is that the son disobeys his father is no longer a son at all.
mātāpitrorvacanakṛddhitaḥ pathyaśca yaḥ sutaḥ
sa putraḥ putravad yaśca vartate pitṛmātṛṣu
Son who obeys the commands of his father and mother, who is humble and well wisher of his parents and who loves them, is the best of the sons.
yadunāhamavajñātastathā turvasunāpi ca
druhyunā cānunā caiva mayyavajñā kṛtā bhṛśam
l have been slighted by Yadu and Turvasu, much have l been slighted by Druhyu and Anu.
pūruṇā tu kṛtaṁ vākyaṁ mānitaṁ ca viśeṣataḥ
kanīyān mama dāyādo dhṛtā yena jarā mama
Only Pūru obeyed my commands and much l have been honored and respected by him. He accepted my old age and therefore, though he is the youngest, yet he should be make the king.
mama kāmaḥ sa ca kṛtaḥ pūruṇā mitrarūpiṇā
śakreṇa ca varo dattaḥ kāvyenośanasā svayam
putro yastvānuvarteta sa rājā pṛthivīpatiḥ
bhavato ̍ nunayāmyevaṁ pūrū rājye ̍ bhiṣicyatām
Pūru is a great friend of mine and he did what was agreeable to me. And son of Kavi, Uśanas, Śukra himself, granted me this boon that the son, who would obey me would become the king and the lord of the Earth. Therefore, l entertain you , let Pūru be installed on the throne.
prakṛtaya ūcuḥ
yaḥ putro gumasampanno mātāpitrorhitaḥ sadā
sarvamarhati kalyāṇaṁ kanīyānapi sattamaḥ
People said: O king! It is true that son who is accomplished and who seeks good to his parents, deserves all prosperity, though he is the youngest.
arhaḥ pūruridaṁ rājyaṁ yaḥ sutaḥ priyakṛt tava
varadānena śukrasya na śakyaṁ vaktumuttaram
Therefore, Pūru, who has done good to you, deserve to have kingdom. As Śukra granted this boon, we have no power to say anything.
vaiśampāyana uvāca
paurajānapadaistuṣṭairityukto nāhuṣastadā
abhyaṣiñcat tataḥ pūruṁ rājye sve sutamātmanaḥ
Vaiśampāyana said: Having been thus addressed by contented people, son of Nahuṣa, Yayāti, installed his son Pūru on the throne.
dattvā ca pūrave rājyaṁ vanavāya dīkṣitaḥ
purāt sa niryayau rājā brāhmaṇaistāpasaiḥ saha
Bestowing the kingdom on Pūru, he resolved to live in the forest and left his capital with Brāhmaṇas and ascetics.
yadostu yādavā jātāsturvasoryavanāḥ smṛtāḥ
druhyoḥ sutāstu vai bhojā anostu mlecchajātayaḥ
Sons of Yadu are known as Yādavas, those of Turvasu as Yavanas, those of Druhyu as Bhojas and those of Anu as Mlecchas.
pūrostu pauravo vaṁśo yatra jāto ̍ si pārthiva
idaṁ varṣasahasrāṇi rājyaṁ kārayituṁ vaśī
Those of Pūru as Pauravas, in whose dynasty you are born to rule the country for 1,000 years.
