na saṁtāpastvayā kāryaḥ prākṛteneva karhicit
na hi saṁtāpakālo ̍ yaṁ vaidyasya tava vidyate
Brāhmaṇī said: You should not grieve like ordinary man, this is not the time for lamentation. Yuo are learned.
avaśyaṁ nidhanaṁ sarveirgantavyamiha mānavaiḥ
avaśyambhāvinyarthe saṁtāpo neha vidyate
All men must die! None should grieve for that which is inevitable!
bhāryā putro ̍ tha duhitā sarvamātmārthamiṣyate
vyathāṁ jahi subuddhyā tvaṁ svayaṁ yāsyāmi tatra ca
etaddhi paramaṁ nāryāḥ kāryaṁ loke sanātanam
prāṇānapi parityajya yad bhartṛhitamācaret
Man desires son, daughter and wife for himself. Therefore, abandon grief, for you are greatly intelligent. I shall myself go there. It is the highest and eternal duty of women, namely to sacrifice their lives and to seek good of their husbands.
tacca tatra kṛtaṁ karma tavāpīdaṁ sukhāvaham
bhavatyamutra cākṣayyaṁ loke ̍ smiṁśca yaśaskaram
Such an act done by me will give you pleasure. It will also bring me fame in this world and eternal bliss hereafter.
eṣā caiva gururdharmo yaṁ pravakṣyāmyahaṁ tava
arthaśca tava dharmaśca bhūyānatra pradṛśyate
What I speak to you is the highest virtue. You can acquire by my sacrificing myself, both virtue and profit.
yadarthamiṣyate bhāryā prāptaḥ so ̍ rthastvayā mayi
kanyā caikā kumāraśca kṛtāhamanṛṇā tvayā
Object for which one desires a wife, has alredy been achieved by you from me. I have borne you a daughter and a son, by which I have been freed from the debt I owe to you.
samarthaḥ poṣaṇe cāsi sutayo rakṣaṇe tathā
na tvahaṁ sutayoḥ śaktā tathā rakṣaṇapoṣaṇe
You are able to support and protect your children. I cannot support and protect children as you can do it.
mama hi tvadvihināyāḥ sarvaprāṇadhaneśvara
kathaṁ syātāṁ sutau bālau bhareyaṁ ca kathaṁ tvaham
You are my life, wealth and lord. Having been abandoned by you, how these children of tender years and me myself can live?
kathaṁ hi vidhavānāthā bālupatrā vinā tvayā
mithunaṁ jīvayiṣyāmi sthaitā sudhugate pathi
Being helpless widow with two children of tender years, depending on me, how shall I be able to live leading my life on the path of virtue?
ahaṁkṛtāvaliptaiśca prārthyamānāmimāṁ sutām
ayuktaistava sambandhe kathaṁ śakṣyāmi rakṣitum
How shall I be able to protect the girl, if your this daughter is solicited by dishonourable and vain perons, unworthy of contracting an alliance with you?
utsṛṣṭamāmiṣaṁ bhūmau prārthayanti yathā khagāḥ
prārthayanti janāḥ sarve patihīnāṁ tathā striyam
sāhaṁ vicālyamānā vai prārthyamāṇa durātmabhiḥ
athātuṁ pathi na śakṣyāmi sajjaneṣṭe dvijottam
As birds eagerly seek with avidity for the piece of meat trhown on the ground, so men solisit women who have lost their husbands. O best of twice born! Being solicited by wicked men, I might waver and I might not be able to keep myself on the path of virtue.
kathaṁ tava kula syaikāmimāṁ bālāmanāgasam
pitṛpautāmahe mārge niyoktumahamutsahe
How shall I be able to place this only daughter of your house, this innocent girl, in the virtuous way in which her ancestors have always walked?
kathaṁ śakṣyāmi bāle ̍ smin guṇānādhātumipsitān
anāthe sarvato lupte yathā tvaṁ dharmadarśivān
How shall I be able to teach this child, your son, every desirable accomplishment to make him as virtuous as you? I shall be helpless without you!
imāmapi ca te bālāmanathāṁ paribhūya mām
anarhāḥ prārthayiṣyanti śūdrā vedaśrutiṁ yathā
When I shall be in such helpless state, unworthy persons will demand this orphan girl, ilke Śūdras desiring to hear Vedas.
tāṁ cedahaṁ na ditseyaṁ tvahaguṇaibṛṁhitām
pramathaināṁ hareyuste havirdhvāṅkṣā ivādhvarāt
If I do not bestow this girl, endued with all qualities and possessing your blood, they may take her away by force as cows take sacrificial ghee.
samprekṣamāṇā putraṁ te nānūrūpamivātmanaḥ
anarhavaśamāpannāmimāṁ cāpi sutāṁ tava
avajñātā ca lokeṣu tathā ātmānamajānatī
avaliptairnarairbrahman mariṣyāmi na saṁśayaḥ
Seeing your son thoroughly unlike yourself and your daughter under the control of unworthy person, I shall be despised in the world. I do not know what happened to me. O Brāhmaṇa! There is nodoubt I shall certainly die.
tau ca hīnau mayā bālau tvayā caiva tathā ātmajau
vinaśyetāṁ na saṁdeho matsyāviva jalakṣaye
There is no doubt that these children of tender years, being bereft of me and you, will die as fish in a tank, when the water is dried up.
tritayaṁ sarvathāpyevaṁ vinaśiṣyatyatyasaṁśayam
tvayā vihīnaṁ tasmāt tvaṁ māṁ parityaktumarhasi
There is no doubt that three - me, our son and daughter will die without you. Therefore, you ought to abandon me.
vyauṣṭireṣā parā strīṇāṁ pūrvaṁ bhartuḥ parāṁ gatim
gantuṁ brahman saputrāṇāmiti dharmavido viduḥ
O Brāhmaṇa! Persons learned in the precepts of virtue, have said that to predecease their husbands in ana act of the highest merit for women who have borne children.
parityaktaḥ sutaścāyaṁ duhiteyaṁ tathā mayā
bāndhavaśca parityaktāstvadarthaṁ jīvitaṁ ca me
I am ready to abandon this son and this daughter, these my relations, my this life itself.
yajñaistapobhirniyamairdānaiśca vividhaistathā
viśiṣyate striyā bharturnityaṁ priyahite sthitiḥ
To be engaged in serving her husband, is a higher duty to a women than sacrifices, asceticism, vows and various charities.
tadidaṁ yaccikīrṣāmi dharmaṁ paramasammatam
iṣaṁ caiva hitaṁ caiva tava caiva kulasya ca
Therefore, act I desire to perform is consonant with the highest virtue. It is for your good and for the good of your race.
iṣṭāni cāpyapatyāni dravyāṇi suhṛdaḥ priyāḥ
āpaddharmapramokṣāya bhāryā cāpi satāṁ matam
Virtuous men say that children, relatives, wives and all things dear in this world, are cherished for rescuing oneself from distress.
āpadarthe dhanaṁ rakṣed dārān rakṣed dhanairapi
ātmānaṁ satataṁ rakṣed dārairapi dhanairapi
Man cherishes wealth for rescuing himself from distress and danger. By wealth he cherishes his wife. He must always cherish himself with both his wealth and his wife.
dṛṣṭādṛṣṭaphalārthaṁ hi bhāryā putro dhanaṁ gṛham
sarvametad vidhātavyaṁ budhānameṣa niścayaḥ
Wise men have said that wife, son, wealth or house is acquired to provide for foreseen or unforeseen accidents.
ekato vā kulaṁ kṛtsnamātmā vā kulavardhanaḥ
na samaṁ sarvameveti budhānāmeṣa niścayaḥ
Wise men have said that one ̍ s all relatives, weighed against one ̍ s own self, would not be equal to one ̍ s own self.
sa kuruṣva mayā kāryaṁ tārayāmānamātmanā
anujānīhi māmārya sutau me paripālaya
Therefore, O respected Sir! Accomplish your object by me. Protect yourself by abandoning me. Give me your permission to cherish children.
avadhyāṁ striyamityāhurdharmajñā dharmaniścaye
dharmajñān rākṣasānāhurna hanyāt sa ca māmapi
In fixing moralities men, learned in the precepts of virtue, have said that women should never be killed and they have also said that Rākṣasas are learned in the rules of morality. Therefore Rākṣasas may not kill me.
nissaṁśayaṁ vadhaḥ puṁsāṁ strīṇāṁ saṁśayito vadhaḥ
ato māmeva dharmajña prasthāpayitumarhasi
It is certain that he will kill a man, but it is doubtful whether he will kill a woman. O virtuously learned man! You ought to send me.
bhuktaṁ priyāṇavāptāni dharmaśca carito mahān
tvat prasūtiḥ priyā prāptā na māṁ tapsyajīvitam
I have enjoyed much happiness. I have obtained many things agreeable. I have earned much of religious merits. I have obtained from you beloved sons. I do not grieve to die.
jātaputrā ca vṛddhā ca priyakāmā ca te sadā
samīkṣyaitadahaṁ sarvaṁ vyavasāyaṁ karomyataḥ
I have borne son and I have grown old. I am ever desirous of doing good to you. Having considered all this, I have come to this resolution.
utsṛjyāpi hi māmārya prāpsyanyāmapi striyam
tataḥ pratiṣṭhito dharmo bhaviṣyati punastava
O respected Sir! You can take another wife by abandoning me. You may be then again placed on the path of virtue.
na cāpyadharmaḥ kalyāṇa bahupatnīkṛtāṁ nṛṇām
strīṇāmadharmaḥ sumahān bhartuḥ pūrvasya laṅghane
To marry more than one wife is not sin among men. It is very sinful for a woman to take second husband after the first.
etat sarvaṁ samīkṣya tvamātmatyāgaṁ ca garhitam
ātmānaṁ tārayādyāśu kulaṁ cemau ca dārakau
Having considered all this and knowing that your self sacrifice is censurable, save today yourself, your race and your these two children without loss of time.
vaiśampāyana uvāca
evamuktastayā bhartā tāṁ samāliṅgya bhārata
mumoca bāṣpaṁ śanakaiḥ sabhāryo bhṛśaduḥkhitaḥ
O foremost of Bharata race! When Brāhmaṇī told this, her husband became grief stricken and embracing her, shed copious tears along with her.
